Talk to me about sippy cups

DS is having trouble with sippy cups. He can hold a bottle and drink from it but when I give him a sippy cup the liquid goes all over him and not in his mouth. Which type do you use? (there are soo many) what type did you start with? Any suggestions to help teach him? I think the issue is that he doesn't want to tip his head back. TIA :)

Nuk has some that are basically just their bottle with a soft spout. I'm not crazy about them because I feel their should be a real difference in the bottle/sippy but if you're LO is having issues then maybe try those.

My DD really likes the Take and Toss ones from Walmart. We fill them as full as we can get them so she doesn't have to tip her head back too far. At first I was only putting a couple of ounces in them because I didn't want her drinking too much water but then she couldn't drink in her own. If she seems to be drinking more than I want them I just take it from her now.

  • Honestly, sippy cups are not a necessity by any means for development. There is a good article by a speech pathologist regarding this.

Anyways, we are using them for now. We just switched from the Nuby brand no spill with handles.

We just bought a few without handles by Munchkin (same spout as above) and she seems to be doing well.
  • Dd doesn't do great with the sippy cups, she doesn't tilt it enough to get the water. She does however do great with the straw cups! We have one thst has two handles on it and she has no problems with it :)
  • LO does well with these...they are not spill free as described, but the water does come out more slowly than other cups I have tried, so she can actually drink the water than having it pour out of her mouth. She also doesn't have to suck to make it work

  • We tried the born free and she just chews on it because it has a hard top. She does well with the joovy dude. It had a softer top but it's still in the shape of a sippy so a distinct difference from the bottle. We also fill them up and she does much better.

My OT friend hates them too. She had us using this type but he just can't do it yet.

https://www.amazon.com/Sassy-Grow-Spill-Spout-Design/dp/B00FN20E8S/ref=pd_cp_ba_2 I would just use Dixie cups but he really wants to do it himself and I want to foster that independence.

This is the one I have that he does best with but he makes such a mess I'm not sure he's getting any water. I'm not sure what he is doing to it.
  • I guess I'll try to put more water in it tomorrow. If I put too much he won't be able to pick it up. I'll have to get one with a straw and try it. Thanks ladies. :)
  • I think we have a nuby one. It's a soft spout but she just chews on it. And let's the water go everywhere. She does this with her bottles too. That's why we're still EBF
  • We're also doing straw cups, she enjoys them much better than a sippy cup. We have the munchkin ones that have the weight at the bottom of the straw and it is spill proof.
  • We use a Doidy cup with LO. I might have to try a straw cup so she can do it without my help.

  • This is how I taught LO to drink from a straw. He got it in two days and prefers a straw to a bottle now. https://www.yourkidstable.com/2012/08/how-to-teach-your-baby-or-toddler-to.html?m=1

  • DS thinks sippy cups are toys!  He will sometimes take a few sips from it but he thinks it is a toy to bang on his highchair and throw on the floor.  I did find that he did better with it when it had more water in it.  I really don't worry about him drinking too much water because he really does not want to drink from it.  He really does not seem that interested in them.  He is able to feed himself his bottle.  He has used a straw once from my cup and he caught on right away.  We just got him a straw cup...we will see what he does with it.

This is Emily, too. She will drink from it if I hold it, but she won't hold it herself. However, she also won't hold her bottle. I may try a straw cup.
