Subway

So for the last 11 weeks I have been craving a big fat roast beef sandwich.... After my appointment at 10 weeks my OB told me subway was okay to eat because they heat up their meats before serving them even cold... I still get them toasted but I was eating it at work the other night and a coworker made a comment that she can't believes I trust subway and am eating it.... Is anyone else eating subway, is it that terrible I am eating it?

Re: Subway

  • I ate it once, I had an Italian combo today from a deli that I know really well and know they properly store their meats. It got to the point where it was the only thing I could think about without getting nauseas

  • I am wondering if you might be better of having your meat microwaved before they toast it.  My doctor told me to make sure to microwave any deli meats before eating them.
  • I have eaten subway veggie sandwiches because I'm scared to eat deli meat. But I want salamiiiiii

I have read that it's okay as long as you heat it to proper temperature.

  • I've eaten several turkey sandwiches from subway.
  • I have been eating turkey sandwichs from home a lot.
One of the only things I can handle. & I kinda crave them.
Maybe I should slow that down.
  • @WhoCanItBeNow‌ I would carry your babies as long as you spot me when I do my deep squats.

  • I was going to start a separate thread about this, but I think I can appropriately sneak it in here.

Question:  If you microwave lunch meat to kill any bacteria, can you then refrigerate it and then later eat it cold safely?

Sorry if that seems like a dumb question.  To me, the answer should be yes, it would be safe to eat once you've microwaved it the first time, but hell, I'm no scientist. I could be ass wrong about that.

You are correct. The answer is yes.

When I go to subway I ask them to toast just the meat.

  • My doc said as long as it's from a reputable place, lunchmeat is fine. So I had an Italian sub this week AND IT WAS GLORIOUS.

  • The important thing to worry about with subway is how long their meat products have been on the line and if it is stored at proper temp (40 degrees or below Fahrenheit). Short Term Cold Holding is good for 4 hours before it can grow bacteria in an open line. So best to ask how long the food has been on the line. However, it is suggested all meats including deli meat for pregnant women to be heated up to ensure that if there is any bacteria it is killed. The occasionally cold sub is okay in my book, I mean I had several cold turkey sandwiches in my first few weeks and so far the gummibear seems great :) Just like anything don't over do it and safety is the number one key to watch for.

  • I've eaten a couple times at Subway while pregnant. I do get it toasted, but just because I like it that way.

  • Toasting does not heat the meat to steaming.

Eat the damn meat. If you are going to freak out about listeria, please make sure you are avoiding milk, chicken, spinach, cantaloupe, well pretty much all raw fruits and vegetables. Salsa has had a recall, nuts, hummus. Those are this year. The one- ONE- major listeria issue with cold cuts was over 15 years ago.

The two outbreaks I saw this year were mango and hummus. Both of which I already had right before. After that, I gave up 'cause it seems like the answer is to just never eat anything that has been refrigerated. And that's not happening. Seems like the riskiest are the soft cheeses I don't care for anyway.

    Enjoy your Subway!

  • Too bad I've been eating all the soft cheeses.

I actually happen to enjoy my deli meat heated up.  It becomes kinda like bacon.  I know I'm weird, but yum.

  • Maybe your coworker was talking about the bread? There was that drama a couple of months ago that Subway's bread had an ingredient that was the same as a yoga mat. (Among other questionable ingredients) So...essentially plastic was in the bread. But they have sense cycled out the plastic bread with normal bread.

I get subway at least 2-3 times a week. Toasted and not toasted... Depends on my mood.

  • Okay well that makes me feel better.... Thanks ladies!! And that it was 15 years ago that lunch meat was contaminated is crazy!! I guess the spinach maybe more dangerous than the meats... Lol. Well roast beef sandwiches with extra pickles here I come!! :)
  • I've been eating Arby's cheddar melts like twice a week. I've stayed away from subway because I would rather have Quiznos then subway. But I CA t find a Quiznos. Lol
  • I'm all about the deli meat.  Sandwiches are like the one thing that consistently sound good, so I while I probably won't be buying them from a vending machine or some sketchy roadside stand, I'm going for it.
  • My friend made me feel like crap for eating subway but I had them heat it extra time! I never ate subway before but now I crave Italian BMT's yum
  • I eat a turkey sub at least once a week

  • My OB said she thinks it's perfectly fine to each lunch meat here and there as long as I'm not eating it for breakfast lunch and dinner every day. I've had a couple turkey subs in the past 14 weeks! Eat what you want girl and love it!

Again, toasting does not heat to steaming.

Yes it does. It is always steaming and burns the workers hands when they try to take it off. I always feel a little bad about it and then I have to explain why I asked them to do that, especially since they always give me a weird look when I ask them to do it in the first place.

I definitely had a sub obsession in the first couple of weeks of my pregnancy. It was one of the only things I could wrap my head around eating while nauseous. Anyways, I definitely ate turkey subs from Subway. :) I think its more important to listen to your doctor then a coworker.

Ditto what everyone else has said.  I took down a Jimmy Johns Italian club the other day like it was nobody's business.  And it was ah-MAY-zing!

AS my MD said, in all her years of practice, the closest she ever came to listeria was in a textbook.
  • I want Arby's. I have nothing productive to add. Carry on.

  • Other option: my fiancé is the pg police so when he's with me I ask them to microwave the meat until steaming. They do it no problem. By the time your sandwich is made it's cooled down to normal anyway. Listeria *risk* gone. Subway goal accomplished.
