I have mastisis :( need advice

I have mastisis

My LO ripped a tear in my nipple so I went to see my LC and she recommended I pump that side for 2 days and continue to nurse on the other side. Then this morning I woke up with a 102 degree temp and flu like symptoms (dizzy, hot and cold flashes, shakes, aches) so called my OB and she ordered some antibiotics. Anyone have any experience with this? How long does it last? When will I start to feel better? Any tips on massage, heat, nursing? TIA

Oh, I'm so sorry. I had mastitis twice with DS1 and I know what a bitch it can be. Once you start the antibiotics, you'll start to feel better pretty quickly. Make sure you keep pumping/nursing on that side; it hurts like hell, but it's the only way to keep your supply up (FWIW, I did not follow this advice and my supply on that side never recovered). Massage in a hot shower also helped me some. Good luck, hopefully you're feeling better soon!

Thanks ladies. Im still able to nurse on that side, but it doesn't seem like he's getting much or any milk. Does it affect the supply right away? Should I try pumping that side when he's done nursing? Im so worried that side is not going to recover and I really want to breastfeed for as long as possible.

I'm just jumping over from S14 because I love reading the birth stories...but I figured I'd share my mastitis experience. I had it very bad with DD and even though it hurt, while pumping I would massage the knots out and that would make it go away much faster. I also took hot showers and used cool compresses. Good luck! I know how bad it sucks!
