Random Hives?

So our daycare told me that yesterday after DS ate lunch, he started breaking out in something like hives. On his face and neck. They asked me if I had given him anything different for lunch, and I had not. He usually gets the same things rotated for lunch. He had baked fish (which hes eaten MANY times without an issue), his usual mixed veggies and some fruit. I get a call this morning from Daycare after breakfast ( which he had pancakes and hes eaten them since he first started eating foods) and the same thing happened. Only this time, it was a large hive on his forehead and a few smaller bumps. I can't see how its food allergies seeing how hes had the same foods for months with no issues. I am not sure whether to get him into the pedi or what this could be from? Suggestions?

Re: Random Hives?

  • It could still be food allergies. I had no idea I was allergic to certain foods until symptoms became worse and I got tested.
Also, seasonal allergies can make food allergies worse. Like for example, bananas and ragweed can trigger each other.

Allergies can develop over time. After I had DS my body went crazy. I cant use bandaids (allergic to the adhesive), can't wear the perfume I've worn for years, and one random day my body broke out pretty much head to toe in hives, then my lips and tongue started swelling. We did extensive allergy testing, but I'm still not 100% positive what caused my reaction that day.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you use any packaged food (cereal, crackers etc) then your 'same foods as always' can have different ingredients in it because companies will change out ingredients for better prices etc.  Something that was safe and peanut free for years can suddenly have peanut oil in it because the company made a switch etc.

  • Oh yeah, I'm all of a sudden allergic to my wedding rings after having DD.
I'd contact the pedi and ask for a referral to an allergist.

  • Any chance he just had his 1 yr shots? It does sound like food reaction, but we were told the shots could cause bumps
  • My daughter has something called dermatographia which basically means she has extra histamines in her skin so if she gets scratched or rubs against something too hard she will break out in hives.  We had her allergy tested after she broke out with hives eating strawberry yogurt but she wasnt allergic to anything.

Me and my daughter have this. I don't think it would just happen like this though. Certain foods will irritate our skin, if you put any pressure on our skin there's instant hives, but it goes away pretty quickly.
