UPDATE: Vomiting after every feeding

DS is 4 weeks and 1 day old and starting on Sunday has been vomiting after every feeding. I'm very concerned, although was told by my doctor yesterday that it is most likely normal. It's hard for me to wrap my head around that since he is projectile vomiting and seems to be emptying his stomach every time he eats.  Is this happening with anyone else?  He has had a couple of wet diapers today, but they were hardly wet.  Not sure if that counts for the "at least 5 wet diapers a day" rule.  Thoughts?

UPDATE:  We went for a second opinion yesterday and he was diagnosed Pyloric Stenosis and had surgery last night.  We were discharged from the hospital tonight.  We can already tell how much better he is doing and although it was all really scary, we're glad we have an answer!  Thanks for all the advice and opinions- always stick with your motherly instincts!

Re: UPDATE: Vomiting after every feeding

  • Sounds like acid reflux. Are you bf or ff? If you are ff try burping after every ounce. After he eats keep him up right for 30 mins.

DS is BF and FF.  I have production issues so we supplement with formula at every feeding.  We do burp at every ounce, feed him as upright as possible, and keep him upright afterwards as well.  Nothing has helped.  It's so frustrating!!  Any other advice?  Does your LO have reflux?

  • Yea she started getting it around a week old. 2 weeks was when she started projectile vomiting. It might be a lactose problem. The only solution I found to help was switching her to enfamil nitramigen. Its hypoallergenic and lactose free. It's super expensive but it has helped. Now She only spits up if she doesn't burp or if I lay her down too early. I didn't want to put her on medication so I've tried other options.

My DS1 developed pyloric stenosis around 4 weeks old. It's pretty rare, but keep a close eye on it. We saw his dr when he had been vomiting for about 5 days. It was initially diagnosed as reflux. The next day we were in the hospital because he hasn't had a wet diaper in 12 hours. Not trying to scare you, but I want to let people know it does happen.
I read about that and am definitely keeping an eye out.  Would you mind telling me what your sons symptoms were?

  • DD started this about 3 days ago. She just turned one month yesterday. She's always had a little spit up here and there. I've been keeping an eye on her diapers and so far she has not had an issue with wet/dirty diapers. She doesn't seem to be in any distress and her appetite is normal. I am seeing a lactation consultant tomorrow anyway, and I intend to ask about OALD or over supply that might be causing it. As long as it doesn't seem to be bothering her or causing any health concerns I guess it's just something else to deal with until she outgrows it.

  • @LunaBug924will you update us on what the LC says about the oversupply and spitting up? I'm not meeting with mine until Monday and I am driving myself insane with how nursing is going and my OALD issues.

  • DD started projectile vomiting at the hospital, they werent concerned but it got worse when we got home.we changed her formula to an added rice starch and its been 3 weeks with no problem.pp have given great advice just wanted to share with you what worked for us.
  • I was just at the pedi today for projectile vomiting and spit-up through the nose. They put DD on Zantac and got us I the same day. She also warned me about pyloric stenosis and possible lactose intolerance. You might want to get a 2nd opinion because frequent vomiting (projectile) is not normal.
