Baking soda baths

DS has a horrible case of diaper rash from an excessive amount of shitting pooing.  How much baking soda do I put in an adult sized bathtub filled with 2 or 3 inches of water?  Is a ten minute soak good?

  • 1/2 - 1 cup?

Okay, that's what I was thinking, but then I googled and something said 2 tablespoons.  Maybe they meant in an infant tub?
  • I saw the same thing when I googled and I believe it was for an infant tub.

  • Either way, baking soda can't hurt right?  Like they won't get a chemical burn or anything if you use too much?

  • I put about a half a cup in his infant tub filled all the way so I would think 1/2-1 cup would be fine!

I would meet you for a beer if I hadn't sworn off booze for the next 26 days ;)
  • I just dump in a bunch.

  • I'm with TJ -- I pour in enough to make the water cloudy. It has never hurt DS, and he's probably sat there playing the water upwards of 20 minutes. I hope the rash clears soon!

  • Thanks, guys.  I tried to give him one, but he was too tired and grumpy.  He just stood and screamed while I poured some of the bath water onto him.  I gave him some diaper free time afterwards and it does seem to have helped a bit.  I'll try again tomorrow.

  • Is the baking soda bath a cure all for diaper rash? We are battling some rash now. I am wondering if I should try this tomorrow.
I think it is recommended for when the rash is caused by acidic poo/pee. To help get the skin's pH back to neutral. Not sure about how it would affect other rashes.
  • If nothing else I think it's very soothing.
