3rd Trimester

Preterm labor (also posted in high risk)

Well, I believe this baby is trying to come. We are 33 + 2 today. very nervous and scared. I took one pill of terbutaline last night and never want to take it again...the tremors and strangeness it caused are enough to send me over the edge. plus, i don't really like what I've read about the drug. Has anyone had magnesium sulfate administered? How did you feel on it? It can only help stall labor briefly is it worth it? Did anyone receive steroids this late? We haven't received any this pregnancy and they don't usually administer after 34 weeks. Is it worth it? Ugh stressed. By the way- baby's head was station 2 on Tues. I've had cramps/contractions for over a week that are strengthening and yday by fetal fibrofectin test came back positive. scared:( I have a doc apt. And non stress test again in a few hrs.

  • I had my last baby at 32 weeks.  I did not have magnesium, but people don't like it.  Discuss with doctors.  Steriods are great if they will give them to you.  I had them, and DD did not have much issue with breathing.  If you can avoid lung issues, your baby is much better off.  As far as preemies, 33+2 isn't too bad.  I'm sure things will work out.

  • Magnesium is a million times worse than terbutaline, I feel like I am dying and it makes the baby less active because it affects them as well. I have had both terbutaline and magnesium sulfate. I don't like the effects of either, but Magnesium Sulfate has benefits for the baby whereas terbutaline does not. Magnesium provides neuro protection. Fetal Fibronectin is not a good indicator of going into labor, meaning that if you get a positive result you only have a 50% chance of having the baby. It is better for negative results; if you get a negative you have less than 1% chance of having the baby in the next 2 weeks.

I have had the steroids. I have been in pre-term labor now for the 4th time this pregnancy (I am in the hospital again). I have received them at 25 weeks, 29 weeks, and I had my final rescue dose at 33 weeks 3 days. I think they are worth it because the statistics show babies do better with them. At 34 weeks the baby has reached pulmonary maturity so it doesn't matter, but you aren't 34 weeks. The steroids are a decision you and your doctor will have to make together.
