I don't think that just because you did it as a kid and survived is reason to do something with your kids. If you know better, you do better. Call me over-informed...
This is rather lame, but I own Croc sandals and totally wear them out in public, even though I know many people think Crocs are ugly. (I don't wear them to work or anything, though.)
I think lemon water is good but I think lemons in water is gross
I always order my water without lemons. But, I also think lemon water is gross. It tastes like watered down lemonade. Drink lemonade or drink water. I'm all Twix commercial about it 'Pick a side'.
Ugh! When I used to drink diet coke I used to HATE when they put lemon in it. (@wasnotwas you were trying to kick the habit, right? How's it going?)
It's going ok, I've tried to replace it and haven't found any solid caffeinated alternatives. I slipped this weekend and had a diet coke because I was crazy hungover and my kids didn't recognize that waking up at the ass crack of dawn didn't help

I also own croc sandals and have considered buying a pair of their clogs. I have horrible foot problems and I ca actually wear their sandals while walking to and from school without feeling like I'm dying. It's better than wearing my sneakers all the freaking time.

My UO stems from all the FB comments about feeling bad for the woman who left her 4 year old in the car. I think she deserved the charges. He ended up being fine doesn't make it ok. Ok so it wasn't hot enough to suffocate. He's 4 those little shits are the masters of escaping. In 5 min time he could have gotten out of the car. If something like that were to happen and he cad gotten snatched up or hit by a car would people still be defending her?
I can't get behind all of the preschool/kindergarten/5th grade/6th grade/etc etc "graduations" especially where the kids are wearing caps & gowns. my facebook feed is lined with pictures of non-12th graders graduation ceremonies.
I agree they're dumb, but wait till you see Grace graduating preschool in her little cap and gown. It will still be too much, but it will be too much that will also be making you feel all the feels.
Haha. It's kinda like mountain dew, but better. Made with lemons and oranges and pure cane sugar. Very regional, so hard to find in some places, but all anyone drinks here..
Unpopular. Nothing is better than Mountain Dew. But, my husband also said when he was working in Canada that your Mt Dew tastes different. So.. I'll let this one slide.
I don't have regular crocs but I wore the croc brand as my wedding shoes.. People could not believe it haha (no one knew until I told them). So comfy and I wore them for a good 12 hours

I was at best buy last week and a mom and her son were buying a LAPTOP and I heard her say "I'm very proud of you for graduating ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I hope this is what you wanted" ...ummmm what? I got a desktop computer as my high school graduation gift, what is this kid going to get? a porsche?

yeah it'll be emotional, but I think it's lame to dress them up in the caps and gowns. for me, that's reserved for the big graduations like high school, college, etc.
Oh like I said, I totally agree that it's silly. But, it's also really cute. lol. Something about tiny humans in things they are too small for just makes me smile :P
I'm already sick of MLB, and have been for a while. It's just on too much. I hear about it too much. People talk about it too much. I don't want to go to a game what seems like every flippin weekend (even though it's really not like that, but it feels like it). Yes, we are fortunate enough that we have our mlb team in town, I get it (and yes I appreciate it), but that doesn't mean I want to hear about how they are doing every.single.day. Moderation please!
5 or 6 years ago, I probably would've agreed with you. But, my H has turned me into a person I don't recognize. Last night, I saw a bunch of people were checked in on FB at Comerica Park and I got sad because we haven't gone to a game yet. It's only June. We only went to one last year. I'm a baseball girl now and I have no idea how it happened.

Jack had one two weeks ago for kindergarten. It was adorable! They sang some songs and danced, gave out awards for star students and then got their little diplomas. No gowns, only caps. He's had a bit if a rough year so it was a huge accomplishment for him to get diploma.

The 8th grade science test thread made me think of this one. I don't miss being in school but I do miss taking tests. I would've taken 20 multiple choice tests over a take home essay. I think I was a better test taker than a student.

I was the opposite. Great student, tests sucked. I crumble in high stress situations. lol
Speaking of schools, 8th grade subjects, things we can't get behind and UOs, I have another one... What's up with this "new math"? I don't know much about it at all, so I am really not one to judge it since I don't understand it in it's entirety, but, the little bit I have seen of it just blows my mind. I really just don't get it, and it seems like it's making simple problems more complex than they need to be. My UO is that I dislike it. Maybe somebody can enlighten me though? There must be more to it that I don't understand.
DD1 brought home math the one day and I went to help her with homework (she's in 2nd grade). I sat down to help her through a problem, and she's like, "No we have to do it like this." Made more work and made less sense. She saw how I did it, she said, "Well, that makes more sense, but we can't do it like that. It will get marked wrong." W.T.F.
I am another Croc wearer. I have several pairs actually - I LIVE in the fleece-lined clogs at my house. So far this summer, I am obsessed with these: I have them in brown - most comfy sandals ever!!!
I dont think giving a kid who is graduating the 8th grade a computer is that bad of an idea. He/she is going to need a computer to do research and type up papers for high school no?
Yes, the kid can use the family computer BUT in my house my husbands computer is used for accounting stuff and mine is used for graphic design stuff (im sure i will be working way before my kid is 13) so i dont think id want my kids using those.
Id probably have Js computer in a common area of the house and not in his room at that age but i dont think its a bad gift idea.
"Graduating" 8th grade, maybe. But, if you're talking about the lady @wasnotwas saw, that kid was graduating elementary school. Around here, that's 5th grade. That's absurd. And, if I did it after 8th grade, it wouldn't be a graduation present. I don't think they deserve a pat on the back present for finishing 8th grade. It would be, this is for school work only. You get "free time" on it with limits at other times. But, I also have 3. So like hell are they all getting their own laptop at age 13. Ain't.
@tiffletons518 ah ok. My "elementary" school went up to the 8th grade so i didnt think that was so bad.
It could be a regional thing, but here elementary is K-5, middle school is 6-8, and high school is 9-12. I do see some kids with iPhones when I pick DD1 up at elementary school though. Effing ridiculous.
This is rather lame, but I own Croc sandals and totally wear them out in public, even though I know many people think Crocs are ugly. (I don't wear them to work or anything, though.)
I loved taking tests in school. So much so that I spent 6 years of my life after school taking insanely hard tests that took up my life. That part wasn't so fun.
I kind of want to see more of this "new math" stuff. The one thing I saw there were a lot of people complaining about it but when I looked at it it made MORE sense conceptually to me. I think we just get hung up on how we do things so often it's hard to accept a new way. However, I haven't seen that much of the "new math". @tiffletons518 can you post a picture of her homework? I'm curious to see how they want them to solve the problems.
Maybe I should go ahead and share a FFFC: I have favorite numbers. The best number ever is 13. After that is all even numbers - specifically those divisible by 10. I also really like perfect squares. Numbers that are divisble by 5 are also cool. I don't like odd numbers that don't fit those criteria that I just mentioned and I DESPISE prime numbers. I was so worried N would be born on a prime number day.
I have irrationally strong opinions about numbers and math.
Another FFFC: MH and I have said that once N learns "A" "B" and "C" we're going to teach her to recite the quadratic equation and that'll be her party trick.
@numbersgirl08 So how is 13 your favorite number but you despise prime numbers?
ETA - not trying to be snarky, just wondering if I would fail the 5th grade math test. 13 is prime, right?
Fair question. 13 is the exception because I was born on the 13th Actually born on Fri. the 13th and everyone was always like "oh that's such an unlucky day to be born" growing up that I started to embrace 13 as my lucky number. So despite it being a prime number, it became my favorite!
Might be a real UO considering how many of you are coming out of the closet on your Croc wearing... I hate the feeling of Crocs on my feet. I don't find them comfortable at all, they just feel weird... :S
I hate the new math curriculum. I also work in a very needy district and I see how the shift has hurt my students. I'm highly certain that it will hurt theses kids in the long run. The new algebra 1 course was harder than college algebra course I took back in the late 90's.
I believe that people/kids graduate from High School and College. But preschool, kindergarten, 6th grade, 8th grade too?!?!?! Give me a break. I think it is way to much. Yes, I know they can change the name to promotion and what not, I just think that it really isn't as big of a deal finishing kindergarten as it is College.

Can you give some examples? I'm very curious about the new curriculum. You teach 8th grade, right? (tell me if I'm wrong). 8th grade algebra is considered advanced if I recall correctly -- does that affect how students can handle it?

This exactly. I taught 4th grade to kids learning English. Instead of math being something familiar and comfortable (because numbers are numbers in any language) it became something unachievable because it was suddenly so language heavy. It was a nightmare for them and me.
