Swim diaper - reusable vs disposable

I have yet to buy swim diapers and I'm wondering what your opinion is between disposable ones vs reusable.

I plan on spending lots of time in the water so I was thinking reusable might be a little more affordable but is there a difference between regular cloth diapers and reusable swim diapers? Would you buy a lot of swim diapers or would 1-2 be sufficient?

For disposables I'm not finding much for sizes, All I see is Medium. Are your LOs in medium? DD is coming to an end on her size 3s so not sure how M would fit!

Any thoughts?

E is wearing size small in swim diapers and is in a size three for regular diapers right now.  Medium would probably be ok, the small is pretty snug.

I bought a pack of disposables and one cloth swim diaper.  The cloth one I bought (iPlay from Target) just slips on like underwear so I usually use it if he's already pooped for the day.  If I think there's a chance that he's going to poop while swimming I put him in the disposables.

I don't cloth diaper so I don't know the difference between the reusable swim diaper and a regular cloth diaper, but it has elastic around the waist and legs to hold in poop and the outside is more of a bathing suit material.  It also doesn't need an insert or anything.

  • As far as size goes my 2.5 yr old and. 8.5 mo old both wear medium. It pretty much conforms to their body I think. Maddy wears size 5 and Alexis wears size 4 disposables.

  • I have the re-usable, if your planning on swimming every day I would get two, just because then they can dry out in between, by 9 months my babies had stopped pooping in them, so I wouldn't worry to much about that.

I use the Bummies swim diapers, which are Velcro, which are easier to take off if they did poop.

As for the difference between them, Cloth diapers have padding to absorb the pee, whereas swim diapers let it through and just hold the poop (this is true of disposable and cloth), and some cloth probably would not do well with chlorine, and the idea is to keep the pee in, so I imagine they would get very heavy LOL.

  • Thank you! I was just looking at the Bummis swimmi and I want to try it I'm just caught up between sizes!
  • Our pool only allows reusable swim diapers. They prefer iplay. I bought one and will order another. I just wanted to make sure the size is right first.
  • I have the iplay from target and I really like it. I may get a second one for the summer since we're likely to spend a lot of time in the water.

  • We bought a reusable from Honest Company when i got my diaper shipment last month, although we haven't used it yet. We will probably use them under swim trunks since we have them already.

Right now, we will probably only swim at our in-laws house, which is two hours away. I'm thinking though of getting a kiddie pool since he loves his bath so much.

When you use the reusable, do you still put your bathing suit bottoms over it? I'm asking because the reusable a always come with designs already on them

We use the bottoms with a rash guard shirt. Both are iPlay brand.
