Has anyone tried potty training yet?

I know our littles are still, well, little...but I'm thinking of taking the summer to potty train my DD. She turned 17 months on 5/28 and is cloth diapered. She asks us to change her diaper, watches us use the bathroom, and strips her clothes off. We've got a little potty sitting in the living room just so she gets used to it. Does anyone have any advice? Maybe on older kiddos if you haven't trained your 1/13 kiddo yet? :)

We're thinking of trying the 3-day method where she's just running around buck nekkid, but I've got a lot of carpet...(insert selfish here) and don't really want to clean up all that pee. :-/ I know every method will have some level of mess, but still.

Thanks!

Re: Has anyone tried potty training yet?

  • My little guy just turned 16 months and we bought him a potty. When I use the bathroom, I take him with me, take his diaper off, and sit him on it. I know he is still very young for potty training so I'm not going to pressure him but at least he can get familiar with it.
  • She pulled her diaper off and peed on the carpet for the first time today!  @-)

She's been running around naked before baths for about a month now, and hasn't made a mess in a few weeks. We do have a back yard that we play in every evening, but its so sunny here (TX) that I'm afraid of bringing my ginger baby outside for too long before the sun goes down.

    Thanks for the tips, guys!

  • We are leaning towards starting, but casually. 3 times this week Taylor pointed to his potty seat and said his version of potty, and when I sat him on it he peed. We've been trying to sit him on it once a day for the past 2-3 months, but he's just now starting to communicate. A few times he's pointed at it and I couldn't sit him on it that moment and he's pooped, so I'm just going to continue to go by his cues until at least 2ish. If I start to feel like he's telling me each time, then I'll do more serious pity training.

We've started casually training. Not pushing it, but we'll see how DD handles it.

She was showing a lot of the ready signs, but since she's still so young, we don't feel like we need to pressure her to learn anytime soon.

I'll have DD sit on her potty after every time I have to go (she always comes with me to "help"). We'll sit there for a few minutes, and if she doesn't go, we say "oh well, maybe next time" and carry on. If she does go, I will make a huge production of it to help her understand she did what she's supposed to.

On a related note: She has also started bringing ME new diapers every time I go, because she knows she gets a new diaper after sitting on the potty!

  • No active potty training going on here. DS has a potty and he likes to 'flush' it but doesn't sit on it often. He has been pointing out his diapers when they're wet or poopy.... so I'm thinking about taking that a step further with sitting him on the potty before his diaper change. He's still not talking so we'll be taking it slow.
