3rd Trimester

Glucose test came back bad, need advice

I just got a call from my doctor saying my test came back at 130 which is the cut-off point and they want me to do the 3 hour test.  I really dislike tests and especially having my blood drawn.  I am still so sore and bruised from the first test.

If you've had one come back and took the 3 hour test and had that come back bad, what is the treatment?  is there medication or is it just a dietary change?  I appreciate any advice.  I know it's not a huge deal to take it, but if I just need to change my diet I can do that.

  • I had the 3 hour test during my previous pregnancy and it is no fun!  I'm sorry you are going through this.  I would check with your doctor and see how this second test would impact you if it turns out positive.  My understanding is that changes in diet come first, but sometimes that is not enough to control blood sugar and insulin may be required.  Best wishes!

  • I had GD when I was pregnant with DS (don't have it this time), and it was controlled through diet/exercise.  You have to eat lower carbs and balance your carbs with protein.  Here's an example of my typical day while on the GD diet:

Breakfast: whole grain english muffin with one or two hardboiled eggs (15g carbs/15g protein)

    Snack: cheese and some fruit

Lunch: I would often get the Qdoba naked burrito with light/no rice and that was about 45g carbs/20g protein

    Snack: Apple and peanut butter

Dinner: Chicken, part of a sweet potato, veggies.

    Snack: cottage cheese and strawberries.

Obviously, I didn't eat the same menu every day, but this is an example of the carb/protein ratio.  When you have proteins with your carbohydrates, it slows down the release of sugar into your bloodstream.  I also had to check my blood sugar after each big meal and in the morning before breakfast. You also barely failed the 1 hour screen.  You may pass the three hour with flying colors.  They set the limits fairly low for the 1-hour so they don't miss anyone who might have GD, but it also leads to a lot of false positives.

You can request to just monitor your sugars w a glucose monitor if you want to skip the 3 hr

I failed the one hour with a 133 and passed the three hour easily. There is a chart out there somewhere that shows your likelihood of actually having GD based on the number of your one hour. In the 130's, it's actually <10%, if I recall correctly. I would do the three hour.

If you have GD, you start with diet modification and move on to medication if diet alone doesn't work.

  • I wouldn't worry to much just yet, a LOT of people fail the 1 hour and pass the two hour with no issue.  I failed the 1 hour both times (with a 140 and 141) and passed the 3 hour with no issue.  It seemed like with both pregnancies every other person on my BMB was failing the 1 hour and very few went on to fail the 3 hour (obviously every other person is an exhageration, but a lot...).

  • Or you could pass the three hour & worry about nothing. Suck it up & take it. It's not uncommon to fail the one hour & pass the 3-hr. It happened to me twice.

  • I just took the 3 hour test today. My 1 hour test result was 134, which is on the lower end.  My doctor didn't seem too concerned.  It was boring because I had to stay there for 3 hours hungry and tired.  Although my arms hurt from being poked with a needle 4 times, it wasn't too bad.  Just waiting for my results.  It's doesn't seem to be a big deal though.
  • I failed my 1 hour with 159 but passed my 3 hour. Ii think I failed my 1 hour bc I had ice cream the night before. Everyone said it shouldn't impact it but my brother has diabetes and he said ice cream definitely takes longer to get out of your system. Anyway it could have been something you ate prior to your test. If your results come back positive it depends on how badly you failed. You may need treatment or just a dietary plan. Gl!

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes a couple of weeks ago. It's a bummer but I don't have to take insulin. All I was told to do was change my diet. It's hard but it might be worth it for the health of my baby!
  • I did everything I was suppose to for the one hour. I failed with a 176. I passed my 3 hour with flying colors. It sucks to sit there and get stuck four times. It doesn't mean you will have GD. Good luck:)

  • Hi, I'm currently living in a remote area. We only have a Dr come into town once a month for a few days... (that's how remote it is!). So when I had to take my Test my dr suggested to take the 3 hour test the first time around. The reason for that is because the results are accurate vs the one hour test. It was brutal but this way I only had to do it once.
So I wouldn't worry too much about the one hour test as the results are not as accurate as the 3 hour test.

Not to be a debbie downer, but you don't know yet that you won't need insulin.  As your placenta grows, the placnetal hormones causing the insulin resistance also increase, which will make your blood sugar harder to manage as your pregnancy progresses. When I had GD with DS, I found that in my mid-30w's stage, I had to be a hawk about my diet and things that didn't normally spike my blood sugar were spiking my blood sugar.  I never needed insulin, but your insulin resistance does increase.

I'm not saying you will need insulin, but saying that you may need it.  If you do, it's not a huge deal.

  • I think I'm just going to go ahead and do it.  I just hate to take another test that I think won't be necessary, but better safe than sorry.  Thanks everyone

  • I failed my 1 hr with 179 on my 2nd pregnancy and passed the 3 no problem

I'm on my 3rd pregnancy and have GD, diet change and I stick myself before eating or drinking first thing and 2hrs after breakfast, lunch and dinner. He will review my numbers and then decide what meds if any to take
  • I failed my one hour and then just failed the first blood draw of the 3 hour. Im not going to lie... the first blood draw of the 3 hour was not fun. I suggest asking someone to go with you, just in case. I was by myself and felt like a was tripping on a drug or something lol. I will say, I was grateful to not have GD... but the little diet change I was told do was for the better. Its kept me from eating a lot of sweets I probably would have stuffed in my face otherwise.
