Group b and allergic to every antibiotic

Hey ladies! My name is Kara I haven't posted on this forum I actually just discovered it! How cool! Anyway I have a daughter who will be two on Sunday and I did not have a positive strep b test but this time I do. However I can't take about 90% of antibiotics. So the baby will just have to be on them after delivery. Anyone have this happen or know anything about it? I am suddenly terrified and wondering if it were such a risk wouldn't they just take her via c section??

Re: Group b and allergic to every antibiotic

  • I don't have the exact numbers, but I would venture to think that the risk of her contracting the bacteria vs. the risk of a major surgery probably play into the doctor's decision.  C-sections present risks of infection among other things to mom as well as some risks to baby, so it's not as if you would be avoiding risk altogether by going that route.  They only recently started testing for strep B at all, my mother was never tested for my sister or I.  I'm sure they will take good care of your little one the best way possible, try not to worry.

  • I am GBS positive and also am having a C-section, and my OB said I would need (different) antibiotics anyway around the C-section site to prevent infection.  So I am not sure having a C-section would help you there.  I would definitely talk to your doctor; from my understanding (and I could be totally wrong) a mom can contract and get rid of GBS multiple times and not even know it; the priority is making sure the baby is treated.

  • OP, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm deathly allergic to a multitude of antibiotics.  Fortunately I don't get sick very often.
I don't have the results of my GBS test yet.  I did talk to my doctor about the allergies at my last appt and she said there would be something they could give me via IV - Penicilin and Ampicilin are both out.  Vancomycin is typically given to those who can't do penicillin. Clindamycin is what I typically get prescribed when I have an infection but it seems that GBS is more resistant to Clindamycin.
Either way, due to my allergies to antibiotics we don't give penicillin or sulfa to my kids.  All three of my older kids are allergic to penicillin.  My oldest one we did scratch testing before administering and he is highly allergic as well without ever having been exposed (we opted for scratch testing because he was less than 6 months old and the risk of anaphylaxis as severe as mine was too much) .  The younger two we avoided penicillin until they were 5 and then did a trial and both reacted immediately.  This LO will never get penicillin.

I'd definitely second PP and talk to your doctor about the antibiotic options.  I don't think a CSection is something they'd risk though.
