Experience cruising while pregnant?

Hi all!

I'll admit to having a slight case of baby fever and my husband and I have a general "timeline" of when we'd like to TTC, nothing set in stone but just an idea for ourselves. I'm a travel agent and I have a cruise group that I'm leading in February of 2015 that's been booked for about 6 months now. We wanted to TTC sometime this fall, October or November. I mentioned this to my mother and she insisted that I will be 1000% miserable on our cruise if I'm pregnant when we sail. I like to think it would be a fun "baby moon" for us, and I'm aware of our cruise line's policy for pregnant women. We could wait until our trip and start TTC while we're away, a "kick off to baby" trip ;), but I would like to start TTC before then.

I guess what all my rambling comes down to is... has anyone cruised while pregnant? If so, what was your experience like?

I should state that I trust my mothers opinion, she knows that pregnancy is like... I'm a rookie!

Re: Experience cruising while pregnant?

  • No I haven't. But if you start TTC in the fall it's not guaranteed that you'll be pregnant by the time the cruise comes around. I would say if you are that worried then hold off TTC or just go for and see what happens. Worse comes to worse you are pregnant and sick for the cruise.

I did it once as a child.  It was around July.  Going out was rough-ish but coming back was glass.  Open ocean is just a crapshoot, I think :-)
This is why I will never do a transatlantic!
Samesies. The only cruise I've ever taken was up the coast of Canada to Alaska and while we mostly had smooth sailing, we had to alter course because of a storm and I was soooo thankful there were bays we could tuck into. I got sick anyway because the waves were gigantic.
No longer posting on The Bump due to the appalling misconduct of the staff and of its parent company, the XO Group. Four thousand  active, engaged members do not represent "a few bad apples" and we are not trolls.
  • I should clarify, we held group space as an agency and my husband and I decided to go as well. So since I'm going I'm the "lead", but I'm not in charge of leading excursions or anything like that. It's a very small group, all people we know and who are prior cruisers. Sorry I wasn't clear on that...I wish I was getting a free berth :)

I haven't had any past clients who have cruised while pregnant, so unfortunately I couldn't get their feedback!

I know I may not necessarily get pregnant right away, I've had friends who tried for months before they conceived. I was just shooting out a hypothetical situation.

Thanks to all, it was nice to get feedback and opinions :)
  • Oh most definitely, it's a must have for all trips!
  • We took a cruise baby moon at 22 weeks.  It was fun and relaxing to hang out at the pool and have food all included.  I was sad because I couldn't get a massage, no tables were prenatal massage friendly.  Also, we passed on excursions because we normally do more active things and zip lining was out.

  • I did when I was 20 weeks. It was totally fine. No difference at all then and when we went a few weeks ago. During the cruise is actually when I stopped having horrible heartburn and started feeling really great. Plus I had food around whenever I wanted anything at all!

  • Haven't been on here in years but husband and I are thinking about going for baby #2 so here I am! I went on a cruise whole pregnant with my son during the first trimester. Awful planning on our part! I was so nauseous (morning sickness or seasick, who knows?), was terribly exhausted and wanted to sleep the whole time, and was a cranky mess. But it sounds like you might be in your second trimester by the time your cruise comes up. Second trimester is generally much easier and many women feel normal during that time. That being said, keep in mind you won't be able to drink or enjoy the same foods (seafoods for example) as everyone else. Good luck!

I'm currently 30 weeks and we cruised when I was 18/19 weeks. I had morning sickness until about 14 weeks and then felt pretty good, so figured the cruise would be ok. Our excirsions we're quite limited but we still had fun. The last 2 days I got sick - still not sure if it was extreme morning sickness, sea sickness (I took Dramamine), or a stomach bug. Made flying home absolutely miserable. As long as your S/O is fine with taking it easier then normal you'll probably be fine, although everyone's pregnancy is different.

ETA: Would I have had more fun / experiences if I wasn't pregnant? Probably. Did it ruin the trip? No, definitely not.
