I've never tried G diapers mostly because they seem to get a lot of negative reviews, but I've been very happy with my Bumgenius 4.0 pockets and Elementals. The only think that I haven't liked about Bumgenius is their velcro. It wears out really fast, so I'd definitely recommend using snaps if you decide to go with BG's.
Yes, definitely snaps! I started with velcro and quickly realized that it's not going to hold up very well. So I sold all of them and rebuilt my stash with snaps.
I had Julie in disposables until she could fit into our one size diapers, around 9 lbs. We use about 6-7 diapers per day and disposables at night (I don't want to mess around with snaps in the dark). So if you wash daily, you won't need more than 10-12. When it was only Alex, I washed every other day and our stash has about 25 diapers. Now that they share them, I wash daily.
24 is a good number if you want to wash every other day. You shouldn't go much longer than that between washes. I have 2 in cloth and they each have their own stash so I have a pretty sizable number of diapers. I keep buying and selling them so I've lost track of how many, exactly.
