Playdate?

When the heck did this term become so popular.  I was born 1981 and when I was a kid, there was no such thing as a playdate.  We just played.  I remember just ringing on the doorbell of the kids in my neighborhood and asking if they could come out to play.  Or if my mom had to drive me to a friend's house I would just say "Can I go to Mary's house on wednesday to play?"   I don't know why but the term just bothers me.  I know that's silly.

Re: Playdate?

  • I was born in 1982 and I had play dates.  When I was little and now that mine are 4 and 2 it's more moms getting other to hang out and brining kids.  I think it was elementary school, when it was just the kids and the parents made the plans to pick up or drop off, that it was called a play date.

I think most things in life are more structured now than they were when we were kids. Parents work more and both kids and parents are involved in more activities etc outside of home than they were 30+ years ago. Hence, we have to plan more in advance for our LOs to have playtime with other kids. I see where the term playdate became more commonly used in recent years due to our circumstances. I don't care for it either. It sounds so formal. However, the lite girls in my neighborhood have a standing Thursday evening "play date" at our park. Call it what you will,it's a good time for all of us ;-)
