Cloth Diapering

EVERYTHING leaks!!!

Ugh! I'm so sick of poo! Every single diaper leaks. Simplex, Imagine, grovia, sposies... They all either wick or poo comes put the legs.
Is P just too little yet? She's almost 8 lbs, but still has tiny chicken legs. She also poos like a freaking champ, so maybe that's the problem? Soooo frustrating!

DD has skinny legs too, and had a blowout with every poop for a while. Nothing I did could get the legs tight enough, but I found her BG 4.0's gave me the best fit. She is only 11 pounds now so we still have some blowouts from time to time, but they are much fewer and I think that the ones we do have can be blamed on second hand diapers that aren't so good in the elastic anymore, or just super poops.

I hope that there is an end to the leaking soon for you!

I second pfs or workhorses, snappi'd and jelly rolled :)

I'll back this suggestion up too. Workhorses have been wonderful for nighttime use and the jelly roll fold is the only one that gives my LO a good seal at the legs and contains her poo.

  • Yep, fitteds and prefolds work best until those little legs plump up.
  • TJ1979TJ1979 member
Mh has vetoed prefolds, and he hates fitteds bc it's essentially 2 diapers. So I bought a whole stash of AIOs for him and promised we would save money with a NB stash. But it's not working and we're both frustrated. There's no way he will let me buy even more NB dipes. :(

  • I have nothing to add since Colin was born with thunder thighs, but I'm sorry you are having a frustrating time!!

If you are trying to cut the cost on any additional NB stash, do you think flats jelly-rolled would be absorbent enough for your LO? Colin has been having really runny poop the past few days since he has a bit of a cold so he's a bit mucusy - we're basically only using flats or bamboo inserts (like an AI2 with a NB cover). The lay-in insert technique always means the cover gets poop on it - but its easier for my husband to just do that and we have 10 NB covers. But when I put him in a flat with a cover (mini kite fold) usually the cover is safe from poop.

We have both flannel and birdseye flats, but the flannel ones are just too bulky under the NB covers, so we're just using our birdseye ones right now (and I wish I had more than 6 ...)

If you are using disposables part-time for now (we are at night), our hospital had Pampers and they were okay, but I had a pack of Huggies (pure & natural I think) at home from one of my baby showers and I definitely preferred those (no leaks). We just bought some Up & Up (Target brand) diapers for night time use and I like those ones too (they were WAY cheaper than Huggies and haven't leaked - yet). I can't wait until my OS stash starts fitting ...

BFP #1 ended in MMC. Discovered Oct 2005 @10w5d, baby stopped growing around 6w. D&C.
    BFP#2 Nov 2005. Baby's heart stopped @ 8w3d. D&C Jan 2006. Trisomy 18
BFP#3 Nov 2006. My "miracle baby" DD born 7/25/07
BFP #4 11/6/12. EDD 7/16/13~my birthday! No sac found @ 5w1d, betas not increasing. Natural m/c started 11/20/12.

BFP#5 11/9/13.  EDD 7/21/14  Our beautiful rainbow born on his due date!!

  • My LO had skinny legs too, and we did okay with P&Ns for the most part. I used a NB sized Alva blend insert, so it wasn't as bulky as MF and seemed to give a better fit.

  • Oh, I also just realized that much of the cost of prefold/flats/wh is the covers that are required. Sweet Pea Newborn Covers are my favourite right now, and only $10 each!

I also really like RaR newborn covers (with aplix, I'm not a fan of snaps for NB) and I got mine from amazon for $12 each.

  • As far as inexpensive covers go, I really liked the Bummis pull on covers.  They're around $8 a pop and super trim.  The only downfall for a nb is that they pull on and off, so if poo gets on the legs, it's going to be hard to get it off without spreading it everywhere.

    I say this with love:

Your first mistake was giving YH a veto.

Your second was not including some flats/prefolds/fitteds in the mix.

FWIW, if weight gain is going well, the diapers you have should fit soon.
Haha, I know. But he does as many diaper changes as I do, so he has to be happy too. And he does all diaper laundry, so.... He gets a vote.

I have one xs sbish fitted. Will that fit?

  • I made a deal with my husband before our second was born.  He took care of the toddler diaper changes and I dealt with the newborn.

This gave me a lot of wiggle room for what I wanted to use.  I personally avoided all of my smaller pockets until 3-4 months.  Now they fit well.   But I've also got smaller kids.

Do you have any smaller covers?  Best Bottoms?  That you can put as a second layer.

Also, I tend to avoid onsies because they can push on the diaper edges and are more likely to wick.  I stuck with a lot of sleepers.

I really like the idea of flats with Sweet Pea or RaR covers. (Wal-Mart FSTs for a $1 a piece are seriously awesome for the price.)

I also like the suggestion of trying different sposies. We had leaks on Buggies and Pampers the worst. Luvs worked best for us.

Hope she grows soon for you !!

If it's an equal partnership he should still only get a 50% say in the makeup of your stash.

Try the Sbish. What's the worst that could happen?

  • Do you have receiving blankets or old T-shirts that you would be willing to repurpose as flats? Then there's just the matter of a few covers.

GMD can be fast, but I learned the hard way that you have to proactively let them know if you want them to ship fast. I once put in an order where they decided to let them decide how to ship, and they decided to do UPS ground, which took forever to get to the west coast. DS nearly outgrew the diapers in that order before they arrived.

So on the super cheap, I could try FSTs and a couple NB covers?

Yes, I think those would work nicely.

And at this point you could probably go with RaRz or Mini coveralls and they would last a good amount of time.  Or you might even be able to use Best Bottoms.  Mine fit good enough at 1 month.

Going to concur here. E was 5lb14oz at birth and I'm prety sure she's still under 8lbs. I just bought a OS BB cover and was surprised to find it fit nicely over her snappied prefold. Bulky, yes- but perfectly functional.

  • I'm sorry TJ :( we went through a phase like this with G and it was awful. DH almost got to the point of demanding that we uses posies (even though I do most of the diaper changes, so different situation ;) ). You'll get it sorted out.

  • Um...the second guy is holding his cupcake up a little high.

I thought that too. He could at least hold it down farther to create the illusion!
  • I totally don't understand why he would veto PFs.  They're easier to wash and spray and everything. And I agree with everyone else that they will prevent blowouts. N was over 8 lbs at birth but lost a lot of weight and took a while to gain it back. We used PFs until he was 14 months and I think I MAYBE had one blowout ever.
  • I'm right there with you! All of our NB diapers wick around the legs because her legs aren't big enough (but they had a little chub, which DD1 never had, and they never did for her!). Luckily poop is still contained, so I'm just dealing with the wetness.

If YH isn't on board with prefolds or flats and a cover, would he just put a cover over a sposie? That would contain poop, at least.

this is kinda what I was thinking.  it would at least hold the poop in
But then that's like, 2 diapers, so they may as well be using fitteds. ;)

TJ, have you found anything that works yet? I vote that you try to work with what you have. If the little one is gaining weight like a champ, by the time you buy and get something shipped (unless it comes overnight), and prepped, she might be fitting into the diapers that you already have.

On the other hand, if she's slow to gain weight then you have more time.
