Ecover Fabric Softener on dipes?

So I read on the websites for the new diapers I got that they suggest using Ecover Fabric Softener once a week with their diapers... but I had always thought that Fabric Softener on Cloth Diapers was a big no-no.

Am I missing something?

  • I'm not sure if it's a hugely bad idea, but fabric softener isn't necessary.  Why do they suggest it?

I would recommend wool dryer balls instead-that will help the fabric stay softer

  • Quite a few people around here use it and don't seem to have issues. I don't think it's necessary, though.

They suggest it to keep the fabric cozy and to prevent holes from appearing in the diapers... though that one didn't make much sense to me.

  • I think Ecover is plant based so it is cd safe.....though I have heard of people using regular fabric softener on their fleece covers to cause a similar effect as lanolizing wool covers.

  • My friend uses it, but she had some major issues with her prefolds that we're not entirely sure what happened. When she prepped them, they got super quilty, and shrunk a LOT. Her red edges are the size of my yellows. I even went to measure mine, andthey're pretty spot on with what GMD says. Plus, they are super scratchy if she doesn't use the ecover. I don't think I understood how rough she meant til I felt them myself. But I don't know why either of those issues would come up....?

I've heard that Ecover isn't good for PUL, so I only use it occasionally on my fitteds because sorting would be a PITA since we use both fitteds and pockets everyday.  Once a month or so I put my fitteds in a "quick wash" with Ecover in the dispenser and it makes them super soft.

  • @mmm50, thanks that's what I'm thinking. I think I won't buy it yet but they suggest once a week and that sounds excessive since I don't know if this will be an issue for me. All of my diapers have come out soft/quilty after being prepped so I'm going to wait and see.
