@dutchkatie !

hi I have a question for you, @DutchKatie‌ ! I want to send my BFF in AMS some gifts. the box would be pretty big, like 3"x2.5"x2". I checked prices on DHS, FedEx, USPS, etc. most are like $1k +. is that right? it'd make more sense for me to buy a round trip ticket and hand deliver. TIA!

    OMG that seems very pricey!! Do you know what the weight on it is?
  • @gwendarling Butting in here-- it might be but I'd call to be sure there aren't any other options. My friend recently shipped a bicycle from Quebec to Detroit and it was close to $500-- and that isn't even overseas.

    No advice specific to where you're shipping but I used to live in the Caribbean and I shipped down a 55 gallon barrel (roughly 24"x38") Boston to West Indies by sea for $250. It was about triple that for airplane transport. The slower the transport time the cheaper it will be. Where you are shipping from makes a difference too. East Coast is closer to Europe so shipping from Boston would be cheaper than shipping from, say, Chicago or LA.

    Also, if you live on or close to the East Coast you should look for local companies that ship freight. They take personal belongings along with large company shipments. It will take longer but likely be cheaper than UPS/USPS/etc.
    @2013mommy I have to know what was in the barrel.

    Did you goof your measurement? because a 3" box is pretty damn small :P
    We mail packages to AMS, my in-laws live there (my DH is born and raised) and it does cost a pretty penny, but it's NOT 1k. WHOA. It's about 50-60 bucks.   But when we mail, it's like once a year and it's a LOT of pounds. We just use the postal service, they are cheaper by FAR.  It will take awhile to get there, a few weeks?  But it's cheaper.

    @eyenigh Nothing exciting. Books, clothes, sheets, food ... basically everything I could jam into it for my apartment because it was a flat shipping rate for the barrel regardless of how much it weighed! And anything I knew I'd want that I couldn't buy on the island. So, um, Nutella.
    I wanted it to be rum or pirate's treasure so bad.

  • Oh jeez, yeah, JackoftheBox, I initially looked for a quote based on a Fisher Price Rock and Play - so 10 lb, and that's generous. I'm in LA. I looked for a quote from the USPS, but based on the measurements I provided, the box is too big to ship. WTF?
