Cloth Diapering

ncdr. how long does a cold last

It seems like when my older two were younger and they got colds it only made them feel miserable for a day or two and then even though they still had symptoms they acted like they felt ok.....at least most of the time until the symptoms went away completely.

I have an appointment for ds2 to see his pediatrician tomorrow since we are starting night 5 of him not sleeping well due to trouble breathing/nasal and sinus congestion.  Today, poor little guy was just to tired and sick to play.  He's also starting to dehydrate since he went 6 hours before having a damp diaper so mama is trying to push fluids with only minimal success.

So is my memory of my older two fuzzy or don't kids usually start feeling better after a day or two if it's "just a cold"?

  • In my experience, yes. The one time fever and lethargy lasted more than a day or two it was an ear infection.

  • I think our pedi had mentioned it can take infants 2-3wk (or maybe 1-2... Idk... Longer than an adult) to totally get over a cold. But that was when we had mentioned congestion for a prolonged period of time, but not the lethargy/dehydration/etc you mention. I would be worried to. Are there sick hours at your pedi in the morning you can go in w/o an appt?
  • Do you BF? If you do, offer frequently as an easy way to keep him hydrated.

A has only had colds a handful of times but always got over it after a day or two. She also lived at the boob during those times, and I think the amount of liquid really contributed to a speedy recovery.

  • I stopped bfing a month ago and of course that's when ds started getting sick with either allergies or colds not sure which. I would have considered going back to bfing if ds wasn't allergic to milk and if I hadn't started eating milk products again. I also have to wonder what role, if any, the down syndrome is playing in him being sick right now. (Sinus development and eustacion tube differences for example)

  • We've had a few week long colds in the past. The pediatrician said 7-10 days is normal.

  • Dr said it's still appearing to be viral however he did give me a demonstration of using saline and suction on ds's nose rather than just verbal description of how to do it.....I wasn't using nearly enough saline to be effective. So now ds is sleeping and breathing a bit easier for having that gunk cleared out. Dr said to see if ds will drink more after having the gunk removed.
