Scared of potty

Milla has been going several hours between wet diapers lately and was dry this morning. I put her on the potty because it'd been nearly 12 hours, I'm sure her bladder was full.

She gave me a wtf look, started shaking, and the flipped out.

I'm not sure what to do about that.

Was it your potty or a child's potty?  I always started mine out on a child's potty because of their age they were so small I just think an adult potty was too scary.  They used it the first month then transitioned to the adult potty with a child ring built in. I know a lot of people don't like child potties but for me its useful for taking outside or on car trips.

Like you, I always started mine out by putting then on it when they woke up from naps/bedtime because it was the easiest to catch and make them understand.  Also, silly question- what's your bathroom door policy?  We've always kept an open door policy to our bathroom so they saw what goes on.  In addition, since we CD they always went to the toilet with us to help flush so it was another explanation of what goes on.

If you are interested in PT- I would also suggest perhaps doing naked time for 1-2 hours a day a week prior to starting PT that way she would be somewhat ahead in knowing about how her body functions and where its suppose to go and be more comfortable with releasing when it was time to PT.  And another benefit to just doing it for 1-2 hours a day is its not so much pressure.

  • I agree with naked time - now that the weather is getting hot, its turned into more naked time than clothed but we always do at least 30 minutes prior to bedtime.

Don't worry if she's freaked out at first. Killian is always trying to sit on our laps while we potty & is very comfortable around the toilet (while its in use or not) until you try to sit him on it, even turned around so he's facing the back for more stability.

We just got a potty chair and once I rinse off the storage dust I think we'll put it in his bathroom and when he wants to he can sit on it. I don't think he's very interested in PT right now since he spends so much time running around outside naked & usually just goes out there.

  • She always sees us going. She even shoves toilet paper between my legs when I'm going. She likes to flush it too. I think it is too big for her though. I'll have to get a little one Thursday while I'm out for groceries.

If I say "momma has to go potty" she walks into the bathroom and crawls into her exersaucer. That's where I keep her contained during potty and showers.

  • I would definitely get a little potty when you're out.  Part of learning to relax their muscles and "go" involves putting their feet on the ground (especially if they're trying to bear down to poop).  It's hard to relax those muscles if they're using trunk muscles for balance.
  • I can imagine being scared of the big toilet, but I have zero potty training experience. I just ordered two potties on amazon so I can keep one upstairs and one downstairs, but DD hasn't really showed any signs of being ready. I just want to be prepared for when she does. Daycare will start working with her when she moves up to the next room at the end of July if we say we are ready.
