Cincinnati Babies

Moving to area-need lots of recommendations! Thanks in advance:-)

Hi there!  I apologize in advance for the long rambling post!:-)

My family and I are moving to the Cincinnati area from New Hampshire this summer (Most likely the Loveland area, but still not 100% sure) and I am in need of lots of recommendations as I know pretty much NOTHING about the area:-)

OB/GYN-I am about 17 weeks pregnant right now, so we will be moving right about the beginning of my third tri (stellar timing, hmm? haha) So I am in need of an OB/GYN and also recommendations as to which hospitals are good to deliver at.  I am supposed to have a planned C-section due to complications with my first daughter's, birth so I would like someone who is open to that, also, I have been labeled as "borderline high-risk" due to a low PAPP-A level, so someone who is good with high-risk pregnancies would be a plus!

Pediatrician-I have a daughter who is almost 3, so I am looking for a pedi for her. The practice we were with in NH was very small (only one doc) and we loved the personal care and the fact that the whole staff knew us, so if possible, I would love that environment again, but I am open to anything as long as it's a great practice.

Pre-school- My daughter is very excited to start pre-school this fall, so I need to hurry and find a place that still has openings.  So far I have looked into POP Kids and Prodigy Preschool.  Anyone have experience with either of those schools, or have other suggestions for preschools that they love(d)?

Those are my 3 top priorities right now, but as a bonus, if anyone has any recommendations for a home-based child care provider who is willing to do only occasional days (I am not planning on going right back to work, but I will need someone to watch my daughter occasionally for doc appts etc.) that would be awesome.  And does anyone know of some great mommy groups in the area so that I can get to know people and make some new friends?

Thanks so much for your help!  As you can probaby tell from my rambling, I am kind of stressed out by all of this, so any advice and recommendations are really really appreciated!  THANK YOU!:-):-)

  • I would recommend Dr Daniel Bowen - I would call now as very popular in Cincinnati. If not him than Group Health Associates which are part of TriHealth (own Bethesda North and Good Sam Hospitals). Bethesda North will be the closest hospital to you if end up in Loveland. I would also recommend Christ Hospital but definitely further drive as downtown Cincinnati. In regards to pediatrician - would recommend Suburban Pediatrics in Mason (have weekend hours). I can't help in preschool department as my little one is too young yet.

    Thank you so much!:-)

  • I second the recommendation for Suburban Pediatric Associates.

As far as an ob/gyn- I recommend For Women Inc. It's a group of about 8 female physicians. I've seen them all throughout my pregnancy and haven't been unhappy with any of them. They will only deliver at Good Samaritan Hospital.

However, Good Sam is a highly respected hospital in the tri-state area for women's services. God forbid you need it, but they are the only hospital in the area with a Level 3 NICU. To me, that speaks volumes of their capabilities as a healthcare provider.

  • I delivered my second with Dr. Bowen, but if you're having a scheduled c-section then he may not be the right provider for you. I've heard good things about For Women, Inc. The group I delivered my first with is no longer providing maternity care. I delivered both of my children at Bethesda North, which is closest to Loveland.

Preschools - my son did preschool at Kindergarden School in Blue Ash. They have a daycare center, but then they also have two pre-school programs - one traditional and one montessori. They actually go through kindergarten.

Pedi - We're with ESD Pediatrics, and they have offices in Hyde Park and Milford. The Milford office would be about 10 minutes from Loveland, two exits down on the highway. I know you said that you come from a small practice, and this one is definitely larger, but they're also very personal and they know their families. I like the bigger practice because we can always get immediate sick visits, including weekend care, and their physicians do questions via email, so in the past we've been able to email a picture of a rash or a wound and they'd tell us if it warranted an emergency visit.

Thank you so much ladies!  I can't tell you how helpful this is!
  • I recommend Good Samaritan Hospital or University of Cincinnati Medical Center due to them BOTH having Level 3 NICU's in house. I am an employee at UCMC and wouldn't deliver my baby at any hospital that didn't have a level 3 NICU. As a nurse, it gives me piece of mind to know if something were to happen, my baby would be in good hands. Loveland is a great area. Health First Physicians in Loveland is a great practice. They are with TriHealth (Good Sam & Bethesda) and are a family care practice so the whole family can go to the same office. They have internal medicine as well as pediatrics. They have saturday office visits available. The ped there is Jodi Harvey and she is fantastic. Best of luck on your move!
  • Meant to add that Good Samaritan and University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) both have Maternal Fetal Medicine for High Risk Pregnancy. I see Dr. Kelli Flood-Schaffer. She is the director of the OB/GYN department at UCMC.
  • I also would recommend For Women and delivering at Good Samaritan, I had good experiences with both of my pregnancies and deliveries. My second was supposed to be a scheduled c section, but ended up as an unplanned VBAC, which went off without a hitch. I loved the support I got from the dr.'s at For Women and the  L&D staff and on the mother baby unit at Good Sam. I'm a little further east than Loveland, so my pediatrician practice, would be a drive for you. Welcome to the area!

    Thank you:-):-)
  • I have gone to For Women and the UC practice.  I started at For Women, then switched to UC's practice because that's where I did my IF treatments and where I wanted to deliver.  In retrospect, I wish I would have stayed at For Women and delivered at Good Sam instead. I just feel that the dr's at For Women are so much more personable.  I absolutely love Dr. Wurzbacher; I actually have 4-5 friends who also see her and they all love her, as well.

Seriously, thank you all so much.  I am kind of freaking out at the moment.  I was all set to go with For Women Inc based on all the recommendations from you lovely ladies, and I also liked what I read on their website.  So I called them, and their policy (according to the receptionist) is that they will not take new patients who are past 12 weeks!  I will be 30 weeks when I move!  I explained the situation to her, but she did not seem willing to check and see if maybe they could make an exception based on my circumstances!  I just hope this isn't the norm with other practices!  My current OB didn't seem to think it would be a problem to switch that late.  I am going to check out some of the other recommendations from you guys!  Thanks:-)

I would call back and ask to speak with an office manager/head ob or somone who would be able to verify that an exception can't be made.
I agree. I would ask to speak to a MW or OB about it.

That is a good idea.  I was so shocked.  I can understand if maybe I hadn't been getting pre natal care up until now, then I'd be pretty high risk, but I have been getting care since the get-go, even what might be considered above and beyond since my OB is catering to my paranoia.  LOL.  I have my records all ready to be faxed to them and my OB even wrote out her recommended care plan to send way before I even have the first appointment!  Maybe I will call back and ask to speak to someone else.  I tried to explain the situation to the secretary, but she didn't seem interested in helping me!
    Thanks again!

  • I am actually in Loveland and expecting my first LO in December and go to For Women's Inc. Send me a PM, we can connect for lunch or dinner. Happy moving.
