Several people expressed interest in reading @SecretAgentKate's latest read: Am I Messing Up My Kids? by Lysa TerKeurst. Here is the Amazon link: https://smile.amazon.com/Am-Messing-Up-Kids-Questions/dp/0736928669/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1401670273&sr=1-1&keywords=am+i+messing+up+my+kids. SAK is already reading it, and I've got it ordered, so I thought I would throw it out there if anyone else wants to grab a copy and join in.

ETA Here is the Amazon (long) synopsis:

Lysa TerKeurst, mother of five and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, knows about the bouts of "mommy stress" that come with parenting and managing a home and a life. From her own experience and conversations with hundreds of other women, Lysa shares how mothers can release the guilt they sometimes feel and

  • stop blaming their parenting skills every time a child does something wrong
  • let kids live with the consequences of their bad choices
  • simplify life to create breathing room
  • quit comparing themselves to "perfect" moms
  • turn to God for support, guidance, and patience

Overflowing with practical ideas, short Bible studies, and plenty of encouragement, this inspiring resource will help moms to realize that--with God's wisdom and mercy--they can experience peace and satisfaction while raising their kids.

  • I missed the description...is it targeted at a certain age or way of messing them up?
From what SAK was saying, it's a lot about getting past "survival mode" so that you can be more relaxed when handling kid issues.  I went back and added the Amazon summary to the OP.

  • I love Lysa! I hear her on https://www.focusonthefamily.com/radio.aspx often. All her books are awesome.
  • I am down. I totally sucked at Divergent though. I read the whole thing and then was too lazy to participate in the discussion.. :O

We're still discussing it if you want to dive back in!

It's okay; I didn't really get into the Divergent discussion that much either. I think this one might be a little easier to talk about since it's not geared toward 14-year-old girls. :p

although, something i was thinking about this afternoon, we might want to make a PM thread, fb group, or *gasp* private social group to discuss this book.  it has a lot of personal reflection and some pieces require a fair amount of vulnerability to adequately address.  it might not be information you want everyone with internet access to be able to lurk.
I was wondering about this, too! I'm not sure how the private social groups work, but that might be the way to go. I'd rather not tie my FB to anything else right now, personally.

  • What's the rough percentage of god stuff in this book? Is it something that you can still get stuff from the rest of the book if you're not religious, or is it always coming back to religion? @SecretAgentKate

  • This thread has come at just the right time for me.  I have been looking for a self-helpish, inspirational, "misery loves company", yet comical, kind of book.  I was also looking at- The Essential Stay-at-Home Mom Manual: How to Have a Wondrous LIfe Amidst Kids and Chaos book.  If anyone's familiar with both of these books: do they seem kinda similar?  and which is better?  Do either of these seem to fit what I am looking for?
  • it all comes back to God, itk.  it's not a book on religion (thou shalt parent this way), but about a relationship with a God who loves you.

so...yeah.  if you don't have believes that lend themselves to having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ then you would probably not enjoy/get much from the book.
But we'll talk about other books too, right? I'd love to talk about L&L with this group too.

I don't mind the religious aspect -- for me it's all in how it's presented. Generally I find book formats to be fairly digestible. What I would like to avoid is pushy people (IRL, usually people who accost me on the street or on the sidewalk) who insist that their reading of the Bible is more correct than my reading of the Bible.

  • Works for me. I probably have several books going on at any one time, but if the group is focusing on a particular thing I should be able to keep up.
  • Love and Logic
  • @Chickypoo2468 I think a lot of us have finished Divergent. I'm happy to keep chatting about it, but I don't want to monopolize the latest thread. So, if you've got some thoughts to share, please do and we can keep the discussion going.
  • Ohhhh yeah I figured I should go back to the what are you reading thread since I had avoided it and obv shouldn't have. I love the Giver, after we finish The Light Princess S and I will read that. I still need to look into it being more than one book tho?? And @Mandmeesh‌ if you find book light to be awkward (which I do) MH got me one of those lights you wear around your forehead. It's awesome. Oh and Hunger Games was awesome, but the third book annoyed me. It draaaagged. Speaking if dragging third books.... Did everyone maybe finish Diivergent and that's why no one is chatting? And I got the book in the OP. The ebook cost just as much as the hard copy. I just want to say I HATE not having hard copies of books, but I can read so much more/easier on my phone so I will keep doing it…
isn't a headlamp way too bright, though?

and also, i HATE ebooks too.  I'm one of those nerds that take notes in the margins in my books
:-B  and NO! the notetaking that's possible with my Sony Reader is not the same as paper and pencil

  • I never, ever write in my books! But I do wish it were easier to flip back and forth through an e-book.
  • I will try it out.  I actually have a few that I can try :)

A private social group might work, since we are all already here.

It must be easy to flip back and forth. Every time I open my kindle I have to spend 10 minutes finding the right page bc E loves to turn e-pages any time she can snag my phone!

I think it's easier to flip in a Kindle app than on an actual Kindle. I love how easy the Paperwhite screen is on my eyes, but for navigability I tend to read on my iPad or phone more often.
  • I have a kiddo that thinks it's the funnest thing in the world to pull bookmarks out of books.  So ebooks are best for me.  But there is nothing better than cracking open a brand new book.

  • I do like the search feature. Then I don't spend forever looking for something that's not even there.
I can never remember enough about what I'm looking for to use the search feature effectively. But when I'm flipping through a paper book I usually have a tactile memory of how far back whatever I'm looking for was.
  • I am catching up on the bump after a day of slacking. I feel like I have missed a lot! I have up on divergent bc I got so addicted that I real all three in a week. I couldn't go back and discuss earlier questions after knowing what I knew ;) Sorry to flake like that!

    Ditto.

  • LOL, I was going to get up this morning and post in the CDBC thread asking if/how people wanted to move forward with Divergent! And it turns out you all are discussing exactly that over here. Sounds like the consensus is to just discuss the whole series? Does anyone who hasn't finished Book 3 want to us to hold off on that for a few days so they can catch up? @TJ1979 @candlequeen
  • TJ1979TJ1979 member

We could just discuss each book as a whole?

Yes! Lets hurry and discuss #1 so I can start #2! Nighttime feedings are so very boring!
