3rd Trimester

Tachycardia?

Anyone dealt with this during pregnancy? This is my 3rd baby and first experience with a higher than "normal" heart rate. It started for me in second trimester and has stuck around since. I have "waves" where my HR increases (resting) to between 100-140 bpm. It has landed me in the ER once, and they really didn't have much to say regarding it other than come back if it gets too high and stays high. It was elevated at my last OB visit and I am seeing a cardiologist soon to discuss it further.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, could you share your experience with me? Especially if you have seen a cardiologist. I am unsure what I should expect during that visit. Hoping to get this under control, I know very little about it other than it has made getting around and doing things difficult as of late. Any slight bit of activity causes it to surge even higher and it is starting to really concern me.

  • I was diagnosed with this about a month before i conceived. I had to wear a holter monitor for 48 hours and they ran 3 different blood panels. They never came up with a reason. I was put on meds, then taken off them when I found out I was pregnant. My resting HR is an average of 110-135 BPM. So far nothing has had an effect on the baby. My doctor gave me an extra-low dose of propranolol that he said I could take if I was having a lot of trouble with shortness of breath from the high HR. I've taken it 2 nights when I couldn't sleep due to it. There really isn't much they can do while you're pregnant other than check the structure of your heart. They will have me on extra monitoring during delivery as well as monitor the baby's heart closer, but so far baby's had a perfect HR :) I wouldn't worry too much! Yours may just be pregnancy related as well, you are pumping a LOT more blood through your body right now.
  • Yep I get this, and I was also diagnosed with SVT (super ventricular tachycardia) I get palpitations and increased heart rate as well. Easy ways to calm it down, 1) carotid massage or 2) dunk you head into ice cold bucket of water. Lol. They sound weird but I was working for a doctor when I was in college and diagnosed. Both methods worked and are med free :)

  • This can happen also if you are low in your blood counts (RBC, HCT, HGB).  You may need more iron/protein to combat an anemic situation.  Has your doc done a CBC lately?
