Complications and Precautions

So I started to bleed slightly on Wednesday and it got a little worse, not like a period but not brown either it just dripped out. I was worried that I would mc because I have been cramping ever since I found out but as bad as not period cramping much more mild. So I called my dr and they had me go to the ER. I was 5 weeks 5 days. When the results of my hcg came back at 16k and it has been doubling since last week. When they did the ultrasound though they found the sac, yolk and what looked like could be the fetal pole but no heart beat. But it's still early so not too worried. However the ER doctor told me it was really small for how far along I am and that it might have stopped growing or my dates could be off. I've read a lot of stories where ppl are at the same time and don't see the fetal pole at all and the doctor just has a follow up and everything is fine. Has anyone went through this? I had another lab test today to see if hcgs have gone up and have another ultrasound scheduled for Wednesday.

Thanks for listening!

  • Were you tracking your Basal temperature to pinpoint ovulation?  If not, your estimated fetal age is based on your Last Menstraul Period, and assumes you ovulated on day 14 of that cycle.  Most women don't ovulate on CD14, so the measurements could be off by a few days, sometimes even a week or so depending on the woman's cycle.  If you were not tracking your ovulation, it is likely too early to see a heartbeat. Best of luck!

So for a follow up. Had the ultrasound today and I saw the heart beat! The tech did see some tissue that is probably causing the bleeding but it isn't from the sac! I'm was so happy I started to cry and am pissed at the ER doctor for saying that it probably stopped growing. It caused unnecessary anxiety. Thanks!
@icarriedawatermelon I think you need to copy/paste your other (wonderful) post :)

Glad all is well with the baby.

Perhaps I should make it a sticky? (heh) What can I say, we ER docs get a lot of hate.

That said, I try not to make any predictions for my patients. I'm seeing them one time only in the ER, and my words hold a lot of weight. I'm more comfortable sticking to "what we see today."
While I agree with what @icarriedawatermelon posted on the other ER thread. OP isn't entirely wrong in her feelings either. ER docs aren't OBs and I wouldn't expect them to have all the answers but she shouldn't have been told "the baby probably stopped growing". If your not an OB and you don't know what your looking at why not just say "the ultrasound is inconclusive we don't see a baby but we do see X you should follow up with your OB?"

That's exactly what I said (and you quoted), no?
I wasn't saying that your the type of ER doc who diagnoses with out all the information but it happens often and it happened to OP so I dont see the point in "defending" the ER on this one. The doc was wrong and I would have been stressed/upset too.
