Low amniotic fluid

I went to my doctor appointment on Wednesday we had a ultrasound scheduled since I was measuring a little small. My doctor then informend me that my amniotic fluid is a little low and if I was 2 points lower they would "pull the plug" I'm on restricted bed rest and to drink more fluids. I was drinking 100 ounces a day before we found this out now I'm doing 150 min. I'm 37 weeks and 4 days. She said that if my levels are low on Monday we will induce. I've noticed my underwear being a little wet but not sure how to tell if it's amniotic fluid. It comes and goes Has anyone else had this issue and how can you tell If your leaking

Re: Low amniotic fluid

  • Consult a physician.

  • I have normal discharge all the time.  I've been wearing a pad for months now.  The only way to tell if it's amniotic fluid is to go to the doctor.  Sorry but we can't help you.

Increased discharge is 100% normal. So... 'a little wet' doesn't sound like anything to worry about, but I can't tell you for sure because I'm a stranger on the Internet. Talk to your doctor if you're concerned.

  • Agree with PP...consult with your doctor if you're concerned however I also have pretty regular discharge which can be pretty common.

As for low amniotic fluid... I had the same thing happen with my first pregnancy.  I went in to my doctor to check on baby because I hadn't felt baby moving all day and they did an ultrasound and discovered I had pretty much no amniotic fluid remaining.  I was sent straight for an induction.  It worked out just fine and I certainly hope your situation goes really well too. Best of luck!

  • I have low fluid and discharge, and according to my OB they are not the same and leaking fluid is more like peeing with loss of control. That said, if you're being monitored for low fluid and you've noticed a change of any sort, call your doctor.

I've called my ob and had to leave a message just waiting for them to call back apparently they had a hour training and then lunch so I should hear from them soon. Thank you everyone who has responded
  • @kaysa2‌ my OB's number is 3. And it's not an automatic c-section, I think he will try IV first, then an induction. Which I'm very glad about. He describes the fluid measurement as "one piece of information" that he looks at with other factors. I am astonished by how the measurements are taken. On Tuesday, I was measured three times by three different people, who got three different numbers, 6, 6.5, and 10. The on call OB got the 10 because "the baby moved and a good sized pocket became visible." It doesn't seem very scientific to me. DH is a scientist (well sort of) and it drives him crazy.

  • my ob's number is 5/6 for an induction. i had low fluid with both of my babies, though not until my edd with my ds and i imagine that is pretty normal as the placenta starts to break down. my dd, on the other hand, was low starting around 34wks. i read on a random midwives blog that coconut water is a really effective hydrator, especially when fluid levels are low, and so i chugged them all day in addition to my regular water and noticed an increase as the scans went on. so for whatever that is worth, maybe try it. with this baby, i have tried to keep the coconut water in the house and drink it on days when i feel like i haven't "kept up" with my hydration and i haven't had an issue. but all pregnancies are different.

if you are worried you are leaking fluid, definitely get to the dr. a breached bag is very dangerous for the baby. good luck! my undies are constantly wet with discharge and little squirts of pee. just joyful.

  • I have low fluid too. I've been going in for weekly ultrasounds and now I have to have twice a week. My fluid seems to fluctuate between 6 and 9. It's really weird. I've been on bed rest since the beginning of April and it SUCKS!
