CDBC Divergent Ch. 16-20

A quick recap, since it's been a little while:

Ch. 16 -- Rankings for Stage 1 are announced. Edward gets stabbed in the eye.

Ch. 17 -- Tris goes ziplining with the Dauntless-born initiates.

Ch. 18 -- Second stage of initiation begins. Tris goes through a simulation faster than anyone else, then flirts with Four afterwards.

Ch. 19 -- Tris learns of political attacks on the Abnegation and her father. More flirting with Four.

Ch. 20 -- Four tells Tris that he knows she is Derivative Divergent, and warns her that she needs to learn how to hide it in simulations or she will wind up dead. Tris asks Tori what it means to be Divergent, and learns that Tori's brother was killed for being Divergent.

1. What do you think is the purpose of the simulations?

2. How has making the cut past Stage 1 affected Tris' relationships with her fellow initiates?

3. What does Tris learn about herself when she rides the zipline?

4. Do you have a favorite moment or quote in these chapters?

5. Is there a moment in these chapters that was more of a "huh?" moment?

To find out their deepest fears to exploit them.

They no longer think of her as a little girl, but an actual contender.

3. What does Tris learn about herself when she rides the zipline?

She is more dauntless than she realized.

4. Do you have a favorite moment or quote in these chapters?

Not sure, can't remember.

5. Is there a moment in these chapters that was more of a "huh?" moment?

Can't remember the details at this point. But this is when the book started getting GOOD and I couldn't stop reading it.

Has everyone pretty much read the whole book at this point? How much time do you want in between new discussion threads?

So, how do we regain some momentum here? Should we just skip to talking about the whole book?

I was just re-reading for discussing the next few chapters and Ch. 21 is a big one ... a lot happens. It could deserve its own thread if people are interested.

I also have more to talk about for 16-20 but want to give others a chance to share their thoughts before I give my own.

Ok and *SPOILER* I know this isn't in this section. But Four's real name annoys the crap out of me. I picture him as Jizzy Pearl-esqe, with tattoos and dark hair and crap. Then when Tris uses his real name I think Arrested Development and my image of him just switches to a bald man in cutoffs.

LOL! Now I'm not gonna be able to re-read the whole series (for the sake of discussion, mind you) without keeping a straight face.

I think it's creepy that someone else can see inside of your head, and especially see something that is as personal as fears. Also, as I was reading the chapter where they explained about the simulations, I kept on wondering if Four was that hands-y with the other initiates. Because that would be awkward. And really, really creepy. And while he's busy walking her back to the dormitory, whoops -- Uriah and Drew are still sitting outside the simulation room, waiting for their turn.

Favorite quote: "We're in a one-hundred-story abandoned building with some Dauntless ... why don't you know that?" -- The first and possibly only intentionally funny line in the book.
