Suddenly crying at bedtime

DS is almost 15 months old and has been a sleeping champ. We have a great bedtime routine that we have been doing as long as I can remember and he has always fallen asleep without a hitch. The last two nights however, he has been crying hysterically at bedtime. It doesn't matter if I leave I him in his crib or hold him or even just let him sit on the floor in his room. Last night he finally fell asleep in my arms after over an hour of crying. Tonight was 45 min and I had to lay down with him then transfer him to his crib. I know it's only two nights but it's so sudden. He doesn't seem sick, not teething, doesn't seem to have an ear infection. The only other difference I noticed is that both days he woke up early from his afternoon nap and was screaming instead of his usual happy self. Has anyone here experienced anything like this? Any suggestions for getting through this challenge? Thanks!

Re: Suddenly crying at bedtime

  • DS is almost 15 months as well.  I have noticed a similar change, but the crying doesn't last as long.  I am not sure if he is just feeling insecure or what.  He has woken up from his naps crying like you describe.  At night he cries hysterically, but I just leave the room and he has been stopping after 5 minutes or so.  The crying has gotten less and less since I haven't been responding to it.  It sounds like your's might be more severe, but I wonder if there is something that goes on around the 15 month mark.

It could be separation anxiety or molars coming in?

  • I would also say separation anxiety.  I think everyone has gone through fits of this.  If it continues I would check with with a doctor about ear infection though.  Sometimes the only symptom is trouble sleeping.

If it helps I would lay down with him and then move him to his crib.  Or put him to bed with periodic checks.  Good luck!
