Parenting after a Loss

Tooth Fairy Woes

Hey ladies! I have a bit of a dilemma.  My son just lost his 7th tooth yesterday, and we put it on his bed (we lose it if it goes under his pillow) so the tooth fairy would find it and leave him money.  But, the tooth fairy forgot (gasp!) again! This makes 2 teeth in a row I have failed to remember to put money on his nightstand and I feel like such a failure.  I was in the shower when he got up this morning, do DH dealt with it and gave him $1 for it (we normally do $0.50) and he seemed to be ok, but I'm not sure what to do... Do I have the tooth fairy write him a little note apologizing for her forgetfulness? Do I leave it alone and not say anything unless he brings it up?  For the record, the tooth fairy is literally the only  make-believe character we do at home - no Santa, no Easter bunny, etc., so do I continue with the charade, or do I just tell him mommy's the tooth fairy and her brain is sucking right now?

What Would Parenting After a Loss Do???

And for reading all of this, have some Andes Creme De Menthe Cookies!!! (DH's favorite)

Re: Tooth Fairy Woes

  • He's 7, soon to be 8.  I think he already knows it's me, since we don't do any other make-believe characters, but I don't want to out myself if he doesn't know. Thanks!

As a kid I didn't believe in any of the make believe characters either. My parents told me from the beginning that they were just made up stories and emphasized the true meaning of Christmas, Easter, etc. The tooth fairy was the only one my mom tried to do. Honestly, since I knew the others weren't real I assumed the tooth fairy wasn't either. I don't ever remember thinking she was real.

So, what I'm saying is, he probably knows. But, it is fun to pretend and make believe things are real that you know are not. I would probably continue with the charade.
