IUI cost

I just got a call from RE. Doc wants me to move to IUI to increase chances if I don't get a BFP this month...no pressure. I have highmark PPO insurance. Any one know if it is covered? There is a note for the secretary to call, but I am not the most patient  ;) Up until now most of my treatment as been covered because it was considered exploratory. I have a feeling this is going to put us in another category.

Re: IUI cost

  • Most times treatment is not covered and our IUI's come in around $250-$300 a shot without meds. Hope you get good news an don't even need to worry about starting an IUI cycle.

TTC#1 May 2009- July 2010 on our own with no luck

Started with RE in August 2010, dx with unexplained IF and then finally our 3rd IUI cycle using Follistim and Trigger resulted in our wonderful little man.  Born 12/2/11

TTC#2 Never really prevented, but were careful early on as Dr. reccomended

Surprise BFP 12/16/13, started progesterone immediately as first numbers came back low, but betas were good.  Progesterone wasnt enough. Natural MC 12/24/13.

Back with RE as of January 2014...

    5/27/14- Chemical Pregnancy :(

    April 2015 IVF#1

    5/13/15- BFP, please stick LO!

Oh and I'm a major Harry Potter Nerd :)

  • You can call your insurance company and they should be able to tell you if treatments are covered or not, I think this wouldn't be categorized as diagnostics, so it would all depend if diagnostics AND treatment are covered by your insurance

  • My insurance covers everything IUI related (just have to pay my co-pay) but nothing IVF.  Make sure to call with every single med and procedure they are going to do and take the time to ask drug by drug and procedure by procedure.  My insurance wants me to go through specific pharmacies and get pre-authorization for everything so it's covered.

  • Unfortunately, we can't really say since it all depends on the plan you have.  Hopefully it won't be too much, though!

@designer303, that sounds like a great deal for IUI!  That's about how much I had to pay for just monitoring of a clomid cycle!  I believe IUI for us is about a grand.  That was at my old RE, though.  Don't know what the pricing looks like for the new RE who I'm meeting today.

Thanks ladies. I appreciate your response and info. The good news is that I got a call back from the office right away. The bad news, moving to IUI would make it a "treatment" rather than "exploratory". We are look at $1, 050 per cycle as well as the additional cost of the the meds/bloodwork co-pay. Ack. I know this is chump change compared to the fees some of you ladies are having to pay. I just know this is going to be tough sell to the DH. He is going to tell me that one child is enough or we can hope for the best on our own HA.  Ugh.  %-(

I will take your suggestion and call the insurance co. just to be sure.

I know how you feel. My regular RE appts with just ultrasounds are close to $200/each- my insurance SUCKS. The hsg test they wanted $800, we just can't afford it- and these are minimal costs in the infertility world.
Check with the insurance company to be sure, good luck...
  • :(  That sucks.  I hate that money is such a huge factor in all of this.
