3rd Trimester

Anyone else measure small in early 3rd trimester?

I'm 28-29 weeks and measuring 3-4 weeks smaller. I measured small with my first pregnancy, but I don't think I measured this small this early. I know I measured 5 weeks behind at 37 weeks, but my midwife thought it was because baby had dropped so it threw off the measurements. I had an ultrasound (with my first) and everything was fine. This time I have a different midwife and she said we would just keep an eye on it. Baby's heartbeat, movement, and everything else is good and since I have a history of measuring small, she's not worried about it. Just wondering if anyone else has measured this small this early.

Re: Anyone else measure small in early 3rd trimester?

  • i always measure small. with ds, i don't think i was sent for a growth u/s until about 32-34wks, but with my daughter they sent me at 28wks. all was normal. this time, i went at 30wks and she was measuring a week ahead, so clearly i just carry small.

i wouldn't worry too much especially with a good history of small fundal height equating to a perfectly healthy baby. if you are still measuring small next time, request one- i think they *should* send you for one when off by more than 2cm in either direction and it will still be deemed medically necessary.

i'm sure it's fine, though, having been there myself. good luck!

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking everything is fine, too. I just don't want to run for an ultrasound and have to pay for something that wasn't needed. The reason I chose my midwife is so I don't have to go through everything I *should* if I don't feel it's necessary. I'm pretty sure I measured small at 20 weeks and everything was fine with the ultrasound. But I know I wasn't 4 weeks behind so that's why I was wondering. I have another appt in 3 weeks and so I think I will just wait and see. Unless I don't continue to put on weight or if I notice anything different about baby's movement, I'll try not to worry. But it I do, I'll request an ultrasound.

I have been measuring small since they started measuring me.  Started off only 1 cm behind, and now at my 38 week appointment I was measuring 5 cm behind.  I had a growth U/S and LO is in the 33rd percentile for size, so she's petite but not anything to worry about.

My midwife also says, "we'll just keep an eye on it."  but otherwise does not seem too concerned.  I think if you have a history of measuring small without complications that's probably just how you carry.  Trust your provider, if they say they will keep an eye on it I'm sure they will!

  • Mizoo, sounds like baby has dropped and will be coming very soon and I see you only have about a week before your due date. How exciting! I'm thinking the same thing... Thanks for the encouragement!

This is my 4th and I've never measured on time in any of my pregnancies at any time.  I've always been 2-4 weeks smaller.  My midwife has never been concerned.  Its not necessarily the size that matters its that its growing.

    I've measured small both pregnancies.  (usually about 4 weeks behind).  I had a 6lb 14oz baby and a 7lb 11oz baby.

  • Glad to see others have experienced this as it makes me feel a lot better! My gut was saying that I just measure small. My midwife with my last pregnancy told me I didn't have a full 40 cm space to grow. It sounds like those measurements can be off for a number of reasons so it's more important to keep up with weight gain, baby's movement, etc.
