Cloth Diapering

Ammonia in pail ?

I know that it is normal to get a faint whiff of ammonia from the diapers at the bottom of the pail on wash day, but recently it has gotten noticeably stronger.

Is this just a result of C getting older and eating more solids, and therefore stronger pee, or is it a warning that I am gonna have a problem? There is not ammonia smell on the dirty diapers when they are fresh off the bum, only after a day or two. It is just a lot worse than it was before.

If it is just stronger pee, is there anything else I should be doing differently to prevent a problem? I have started rinsing ON diapers, and have switched from a cold rinse to a warm rinse.

Re: Ammonia in pail ?

  • I don't have any helpful advice, but I just wanted to say that I've noticed a similar phenomena.  Lately when I dump the wet bag into the wash the bottom is very potent ammonia-y smelling.  His daytime dipes don't smell bad right off his bum, just after they've been in the wetbag for a while - so I figure that until it causes issues with LO's bum, it's not something to worry about.

But I'll definitely be following in case it is something I can/should do something about!

  • I feel like yesterday the wet bag smelled a bit when dumping it in the washer. I actually just wondered if it was from being considerably warmer the couple days they were sitting there.

I didn't even think about that, but it has been in the low 80s in our house recently so that makes sense...

  • If you're using a plastic pail with a liner, sometimes the pail can get stinky if the liner leaks a little bit.

  • We have this problem too, no stink in fresh peed diapers but definitely stinky on laundry day and we wash every other day. We rinse ON diapers and leave the window half open in the bathroom where the pail was stored and it was better. It's getting warmer now and we have to close windows for AC use and so we moved the pail to one of the main rooms downstairs. No more stink and if we have company over then I relocate the pail somewhere less conspicuous.
