MOTN Fevers

I think DS is either teething or fighting a virus. Last night he woke up at his usual MOTN time, but he felt very hot and had trouble going back to sleep. I gave him a dose of Tylenol, and he went back to sleep for the rest of the night and his temp felt normal this morning.

This led me to wonder - if your LO "feels" hot to the touch in the MOTN (or anytime, when it seems to be bothering them), do you give a dose of fever meds, or do you always take their temp first to make sure they actually have a fever?

Re: MOTN Fevers

  • Less than a minute to take LO's temperature. I would rather not give meds unless needed, so I take the 30 seconds and check it.

None of my kids ever wake up MOTN even when teething and I don't treat fevers. Fevers are your bodies way to fight off viruses so they are good and serve a purpose. By not treating it burns it off faster and therefore they are better faster. The RARE time I treated one it was because one of my child voiced discomfort of a headache and didn't want off the couch- both unusual. With a fever I have them drink and try to keep them playing stationary vs running around.
  • I don't treat fevers per se...I treat the baby. So if LO would go back to sleep without tylenol, I'd just put her back to bed. If she was in pain/fussy and couldn't sleep, I'd give some Advil.
I agree with this.  Just because my kid has a fever doesn't mean he needs medicine if he is otherwise acting normal.  However, if he is warm and fussy and not easily soothed then I'd give some.
  • DD is a hot sleeper, she's often warm to touch at night. If I think it's a high fever I'll check and Medicate if she's not able to sleep.

  • I only take a temp if dd feels unusually hot or I want to know her temp. Otherwise, i would treat her symptoms like pp and give tylenol to make her more comfortable if she couldn't be soothed. Especially since waking up in the middle of the night would be really unusual for her. Like pp mentioned fevers are often our bodies way of fighting of a virus/infection so they can be good. However, they may come along with body aches or pain depending on the cause which can be helped with tylenol or advil.
