C-sections

Scheduled 3rd c-section for AFTER due date...

So, I am due on Dec 27th with #3.  My OB had suggested Dec 22nd for the C-section which would mean I could leave the hospital on Christmas morning.  I decided to wait until AFTER Christmas if possible.  Right now I'm scheduled for Dec 29th (2 days after my EDD).

DH thinks I should do the c-section on the 22nd to guarantee I'll be home on Christmas Day, but I really want to wait as long as possible (unless I go into labor of course).

Anyone else waiting until after your EDD to have your C-section?

There is no guarantee you will be home on Christmas Day. That's the usual length of stay, there are plenty of things that could happen to make it longer.

Personally, I'd want to wait as long as possible.

  • The only thing that would give me pause is that since this is your 3rd you are likely to go into labor early (before your EDD)...

How old are your other kids? Can you do Christmas early or late? I can see both sides. You can be home with baby for Christmas but fresh out of a CS or you could be super pregnant. My third pregnancy was my longest by 2 weeks and the only time I made it to my scheduled CS so you really don't know. I would probably schedule it late and then if baby decides to come sooner then so be it. I know it's hard with other kids in the mix, I was hoping not to miss Halloween with my kids last year. Either way, what an exciting present for you this year!

My kids will be 2 and almost 7.  If the older one was younger, I wouldn't worry so much about the whole Christmas thing but I really love seeing him so excited on Xmas morning (plus he still believes in Santa).

I think I will just have to plan really well for Xmas this year and shop/wrap way ahead of time.  That way if I am in the hospital on Xmas morning, I can have Dh or my mom set everything up that night.

I really hope to make it to 40w2d for the C-section, but if it happens sooner...I can work with that too!

When did you go into labor if at all with your others?

That is what I would go after but, this is never totally accurate and really neither is it being your 3rd.

I haven't gone into labor by myself yet.
#1 I was 41.5 weeks with zero progression #2 was scheduled at 39 weeks and I haven't been in labor yet either.

I went into labor at 39w5d with my 1st and had a scheduled C-section at 39w5d with #2.  So technically I have never made it to my EDD, but I might have with #2.

So, who knows what will happen!

  • Honestly I would just do it before
  • Do it before. See if the Doc will move to the 19th or 20th so you are home and baby is only a week early. It would be awesome to add baby to the christmas festivities and keep it low key since you are also healing. Personally, if I had control, I would not want my child's birthday falling between Christmas and NYE. at least before you can do celebrations before Christmas craziness.

  • I'm really surprised your OB is letting you go that long! Mine have always pushed for a RCS at least 1 week ahead of time.
  • I've scheduled mine for three days after and this is my third c/s. I was a week past due with my first and never went into labor trying to vbac my 2nd, so that one was 10 days after due date. I'm hoping this one likes to stay cozy too.

  • FWIW, I was born on December 29th and it kind of sucks. You're right between Xmas and New Years and you pretty much get lost in the shuffle (not that my parents didn't try to make it special...). With a birthday before the holidays you can feel a little more celebrated, and not lost in the midst of other festivities
