January 2015 Moms

First ultrasound

My doctor (quick background---I'm an American living overseas, and using the U.S. Embassy doctor) told me I don't need to go in for an ultrasound until I'm 12 weeks along.  Does this sound off to anyone ?

With my first pregnancy, a previous Embassy doctor had me go in for an ultrasound at 6 weeks!  Thoughts?

  • Hi! My ob/gyn doesn't do an ultrasound 'til the Nuchtal Translucency at 12-13 weeks, and if you don't get the NT, your first isn't until the 20 week one. It's a little frustrating, but common.
Looking forward to meeting our first child in January 2015!

  • My first US is a viability scan at 8 weeks. Every dr is different it seems.

  • It really does differ from doctor to doctor. I've heard everything from one at 7-8 weeks, 12ish weeks, and some people who don't get an ultrasound until their anatomy scan around 20 weeks.

  • I think ever doctor is different. Some take a different approach to U/S and only do two unless medically necessary. Mine will normally do one between 8-10 weeks,  then I can opt to have an NT scan at 12 weeks and then my 19-20 U/S.

With my daughter (which was 10 years ago, yikes!) they would have only done one at around 20 weeks, but I had bleeding so they checked me a couple of times early on. With DS, they did a dating u/s early, the anatomy scan at around 20 weeks, and then a growth scan at about 34 weeks. I'm expecting the same this time.
