Formula - How many ounces?

Out of curiosity, how many ounces of formula does your LO drink within 24 hours on average? And how old are they? My LO is 7 weeks and drinks 35 oz a day which I think is a lot. I'm starting to think he would drink 30 oz in 1 feeding if I let him. Not sure he knows when he's full and I'm scared I'm over feeding him. Additionally I still struggle when knowing when he's hungry vs fussing for another reason such as being tired. Uggh, I feel like I second guess everything!

Re: Formula - How many ounces?

  • My LO drinks between 25-30 oz. She's 8 weeks old and about 9.5lbs. She drinks anywhere from 3-5 oz per feeding.
I can tell when she's full because she turns away from the bottle. When she's hungry, she'll start turning her head towards my arm or sucking on her hands. If I let it go too long she'll start whining more and won't calm down with a pacifier. That's when I know it's time to eat and not sleepy, bored, uncomfortable etc

  • DD2 drinks about 32oz a day. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. She's 2 months today and weighs 11lbs 12oz.
I don't worry about over feeding at this stage, unless the dr is concerned. When LO is full she turns away from bottle. When she is fussing due to being hungry, she usually is also sucking on arms, not taking the paci and nothing calms her besides the bottle.

  • I just started tracking how much she's eating today as I had the same thoughts- I think she could eat for hours if I had enough! Today was 15 oz in bottles and 4 BF sessions...if only I could tell how much I was giving her off the boobs. She's 5 weeks tomorrow and 8.1 lbs at her last visit two weeks ago. I know shes done with the bottle and doesnt need another ounce or so when she has the 'I'm wasted" face and relaxes, doesn't grab her hands or go for my finger if I put them up to the corner of her mouth. Sometimes in anywhere from 10 minutes to a half an hour later she needs another ounce or so to really relax and be full. Always learnign over here!

One of my girls eat this much too (now 13 lbs). I think she has a high metabolism. Her twin only drinks around 25 oz (11lb). I asked the pedi and said that its fine and babies will stop eating when they are full and to continue feeding on demand.

  • We feed on demand as well. I was worried that I was over feeding but the Pedi said if she is not spitting up then she is not over eating. She eats between 3-6oz a feeding every 3-4 hours with two longer stretches overnight of between 5-7 hours.

I have been wondering the exact same thing. My LO is 6 weeks and eats between 30-35 oz a day. I am able to pump about half that amount; but have to supplement the other half with formula. He eats 5 oz on average per bottle which seems like a lot compared to others on here. However LO seems healthy and happy so I have come to terms with the little hungry hippo ;-)
  • My DD is 2 months today, almost 11lbs, and eats around 25ish per day. Though, I think it is time to up it because I noticed in the past 2 days that she is more fussy in between feedings & is chewing on her hands. I just did her last feeding for the night & started with 5oz, she gobbled it up so I made 2 more and she finished it & fell right asleep... I was just reading about it and it said online a general rule of thumb is 2.5oz per pound of body weight for total ounces per day.

  • My LO is at 5 oz every 3-4 hrs. He is sleeping a little longer during the night now usually a feeding at 11 then he sleeps till 5 or 6. So he is roughly at 30-35 oz per day. He is 7 weeks old and about 12 lb. just in the last day or two he is starting to not eat as often or else doesn't finish the bottle. It's always changing!
  • My girls have anywhere from 20-24 ounces a day. Combo of pumped milk and neosure formula. They are both getting close to 8 lbs and almost 8 weeks. Occasionally one or both gets one nursing session a day.

  • This is a great thread! My LO is 5 weeks and eats about 30-36 ozs a day (about 3 to 3.5 ounces a feeding and sometimes needs a snack of 1.5-2 ounces once maybe twice a day). She is a CHUNK!

I'm calling the pedi today though to discuss reflux. I've asked him twice about it and he didn't seem to think so, but something in my gut tells me she might have it. I've read that sometimes undiagnosed reflux can lead to over feeding because the formula/breast milk and sucking helps relieve the burning from the acid....
  • My LO is a guzzler and drinks around 35oz in a day.. 5oz each time. I'm not too worried at the mo but if she starts wanting more than that I am going to check with the doctor coz Christ knows where she 's putting it! Lol!
  • We are both bf and supplementing with formula here, due to slow weight gain (it took her a month to get back to her birth weight!). Now I bf every 2-3 hours, and offer a 4 oz bottle of formula four times a day. Like most of us, I wish I knew how much she was getting during a bf session! But she's getting there. :)
  • My little guy is 6 week and only eats 20-24 oz a day. Pediatrician says that's fine, but I do wish he'd up the ol' intake. He's started eating weird at night, too, where he wants 1oz every hour (we formula feed) - usually around his fussy time of night. So annoying because it's usually just past the hour mark of the last bottle we made, which means we are wasting a lot of formula. Suggestions?

  • My little lady has about 30 oz a day. She is 8 weeks old. Supposedly they are to eat about 2.5 oz/ pound.
  • Wow, this is interesting. I really wish I knew how much she's getting with BF! She lost a lot of weight and has been slow to gain, so we were supplementing with anywhere from 1-6oz formula/day. For the past 2 weeks I've been EBF. She's gaining...so obviously getting what she needs, but has NEVER gone for a stretch longer than 3 1/2-4 hours (which is only at night). She's 4 1/2 weeks and   8.5 lbs.

Make smaller bottles. Or make a batch ahead of time in the fridge and pour out/warm as needed. I prefer to mix on demand though.
I usually make a batch in the morning and then pour/warm as needed. Some times she wants 4oz, other times it's only 1 or 2.
