Cloth Diapering

homemade deo

Hey ladies,
I know a lot of you are DIY/crafty craftersons and I was wondering if anyone else makes their own deodorant. I have been making my own for awhile now and tried 2,recipes. It seems the one I'm using now (coconut oil, baking soda and cornstarch) is a much less pleasant summer deodorant than anticipated. Anyone have other suggestions?

Re: homemade deo

  • I use a recipe from crunchy berry called not a secret homemade Deoderant. Bees wax, coconut oil, coco butter, clay powder, and I add a little baking soda. Works great and I am a mega sweater.

  • I add a teaspoon or so of baking soda and extra beeswax because I like mine firmer. I got all the ingredients, including containers, on amazon.

I use coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot 2:2:1. Love it, and I have stinky pit issues normally. No issues now.
I can vouch for this one.  I've been using it for a few months & love it.

Ha ha ha, not that MK needs anyone to vouch for her.  I guess I meant to say I second this one!  ;)

I keep wanting to try this, but where do you find arrowroot powder? And what type of container do you store the finished product in?

Amazon has it.  I clean out my old CJs/EMAB bottom balm cream containers and put it in them.

And as a random side note, arrowroot is a great egg replacer in baking, especially cakes.
Funny story.  When I first switched to this deodorant, I told my mom about it. She's always been all about organic/as natural as possible.  (I only had carob chips, no chocolate chips or refined sugar until I was 5.  She CD'ed, EBF'ed, baby wore back in the 70s/80s.  Has been making her own detergent and cleaners for years.)

Anyway I told her about it, and her first reaction was "is that safe?"  She proceeded to google arrowroot and find out all the uses.  Her conclusion was it's safe for me & G while he's nursing.
:D  Her google search also taught us about egg replacement. LOL.

  • Thanks guys. The one suggested with the clay sounds similar to one I tried but different enough that I think it might be the next one I make.

  • Oh, my. I was reading the Amazon description of Bob's Red Mill Arrowroot Flour, and when it described is as a "perennial herb" I totally read "perineal." <sigh> I miss having decent reading comprehension.

  • No but my dad made some and gave it out to everyone last year. I never used it because he out it in a tub and it was hard as a rock and difficult to get out.

I tried making my own deodorant a few years ago and it was NOT successful.  I'm going to try some of the recipes you guys mentioned.

On another note, the link to bob's red mill arrowroot led me down an amazon-wormhole that ended with zinc oxide.

Have any of you ever made sunscreen?
Have you tried your local grocery store or natural store? Our local Krogers has a natural section and they may have arrowroot there. Other than that even small natural stores in  your area might also carry the powder.

I haven't made my own sunscreen but I was curious about it.

  • tapioca starch also works (tried it cause that was what I had)
  • I want to try some deodorant like these, but I want to buy a stick somewhere first to make sure I like it. I would hate to spend the money and effort and not like it.

I found one recipe that I might like, but it sounds really scented. I'm looking for as unscented as possible. Any recommendations??
