HPT question

So I took a HPT about a few days ago. (ept) The results in the little test window is either a negative sign (a horizontal line) or a positive (horizontal AND vertical line). The control window had a horizontal line loud and clear so I knew it was working. In the test window it only had a vertical line. No horizontal. So what does that mean? What hormone/chemical/etc makes it appear?

You could have a faulty test.
HCG makes a test line turn positive.

Retest with a pink dye test. I try to avoid the blue dye cross types.

Oops, I meant to clarify... what makes the NEGATIVE line appear? Is it just a reaction to moisture? the "control" line came out just fine so I thought it was weird that the negative line didn't show up. I'll grab another when I go to the store in the morning but it got me wondering!

I've never wasted a test on regular water to see if it's just the wetness making it a negative, or if it not reacts to urine. Google might be the best to answer this for you.

Tried googling... but haven't found an answer! I was hoping some of you wise women here would have an idea.

It just seemed strange to me that "positive" vertical line and the test line came out so clear. I guess I"ll have a better idea in the morning.

In my experience there is no such thing as a "negative" line? What do you mean?
