The 'No Zone'

When I took my parenting class for DD I remember the teacher talking about the No Zone for kissing the baby around their face/head after they were born if the person wasn't vaccinated. I know we have talked about this before with grandparents/parents getting the TDAP but are you making that announcement before the baby is here? Or waiting until the baby arrives to say something like "you can hold him/her but please no kissing the head for germ purposes"?

I think I am going to mention it to my IL again and also other family ahead of time.

We don't live close enough to family for this to matter, and our friends are not the type to kiss the baby.. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it.. does anyone actually kiss someone else's newborn baby? ..or any other age child for that matter? That seems weird to me.

  • So now I am starting to really question my OB. He told me that no one around me needed to get the Tdap because LO would be covered through my shot until she was old enough to get the vac. He told me it was unncessary because I was telling my whole family to get it! Is this completely bogus?

LO will not be 100% vaccinated against whooping cough until age 1.  Maybe he meant that the shot you'll get around 28 weeks should be good for some coverage until the first round of vaccines at 2 months?

  • Both my parents are physicians, so they know to get their TDAP, which they've already done. H's parents are also aware of the issues with pertussis, so they've gotten their TDAP as well. We've asked our siblings already, and they are either up to date or will be by the time the baby is here.

She won't be meeting other family until she's about 3 months old, at which point she'll have a good amount of coverage from her boosters, and the real concern will be ppl with colds/the flue. Our nearby friends are also all current with their TDAP, as I've just simply asked them in conversation.

I would think the same applies to those that want to smell the baby's head. I have close friends that give DD kisses all the time.  I think it depends on the familiarity.
