What to wear during water labor

I'm hoping to labor most of the time in a tub. My midwife said she likes her patients to wear their own clothes. I have no clue what to wear, I assume I'll be naked waist down but would prefer not to be completely nude. With DD I wasn't allowed to labor in the tub and just wore a hospital gown. Any suggestions? Or anyone else laboring or birthing in a tub (or have before) that can tell me what you wore? Tia

Re: What to wear during water labor

  • No experience but I would have assumed a bikini/tankini top or singlet top for your time in the water.

  • I labored in the tub at the hospital with my first and was completely naked the whole time. Planning a water birth this time and I'll pack a swimsuit top but I likely won't even bother with it. FTR I am actually a pretty modest person, just not during labor apparently :)

I labored in the tub with my son. I'm not usually modest and I thought I'd be naked. Nope. Well I was maher from the waist down but I kept my bra on.
  • I plan on wearing a bra

  • I don't understand why you wouldn't be nekkid (pictures??).  I would be a fan of not getting the baby goo all over clothes.
  • I'm not laboring in a tub but if I was I'd wear a bathing suit top. Nothing good I wouldn't mind pitching after.

  • Thanks ladies. I was thinking a bra but wasn't sure since I can't actually push in the water. I'll have to switch to the bed or wherever I choose to push. @alyssa719‌ I'm really large chested and just don't feel comfortable letting them hang out. Just a personal thing.

I've had waterbirths and my midwife doesn't care what you wear but her only requirement is Dads/spouses must wear swim trunks- hahaha (neither DH or I were interested in him being in the tub).  With my first I wore nothing because my labor went so fast it was a rush to get the tub filled (I was already fully dilated and at station 2).  But after that birth I just wore a bikini swim top.  I didn't want to be too covered on top because I wanted skin to skin.

I was totally naked during my water birth. This time I want to bring a comfy bra in case I use the tub. I think one of those sleep nursing bras would be good, because then you can nurse the baby right away if you want.
