Disana prep - did I do it right?

Got our Disana wool cover a couple days ago and I finally got around to washing/lanolizing last night, but the result isn't what I expected.

I did a half cap Eucalan w/ melted lanolin in tepid water, soaked 15 minutes, then rolled in a towel and laid out to dry. The body didn't shrink at all, in fact it looks just like it did before I washed it. Based on the GMD site instructions I expected that it would draw in some. Does that just happen over time?

Side question for those that use Sbish or other fitteds, how many dry cycles and on what temp do you have to run to get them dry? I ran mine twice on low/med heat, then hung up and they were still damp in the seams 24 hours later.

  • I don't think I noticed that my disana shrunk at all when I washed and lanolized them the first time. I'm sure you're okay! I don't have sbish but I have other fitteds. Usually I'll do one dry cycle (51 minutes) on medium heat and then just hang them until they're al the way dry. I used to hang them from the washer but it was taking a year for them to dry.

Wool will shrink a little over the time. Partly from when you wash, and partly from baby moving around when wool is damp. (This is the approach I've taken -- just let it do it's own thing -- my ON wool is a bit over a year old and on it's own it has slightly felted in the crotch, so it's nice and dense and holds lanolin well)

If you want to hand felt it, you need agitation/friction. While it is still soaking, rub it together with your hands in the place you want to felt it. Go slowly. Better to do it in several small stages that you can control, rather than too much all at once.

As for Sbish and other thick fitteds I dry them on high with my other natural fiber diapers/inserts, and then drape them over the radiator to dry out completely.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm going to try out the cover tonight!

Don't know why my fitteds are taking so long. My dryer had a sensor and stops too early I think. I'll try a timed dry instead next time.

@Chickypoo2468‌ how long would you soak?

  • It may help to brush or vacuum out your dryer ducts periodically. Sometimes lint can get past the lint screen and build up and mess with the sensor.

I always have to do time dry for my diapers. The sensor doesn't cut it.
