BGs Leaking

We have been using BGs since DD was about 2mo old. She is now 21mo and we're starting to get leaks. I assume that it's a build-up that's happened over time. I don't remember what to do on a deep clean on them. Wash them in hot water several times? Wash with some bleach? Do I do just the inserts or the covers too?

I know this probably gets redundant, but I spent about 10 minutes researching trying to find something that might help. I probably just suck at looking right now, long weekend and all, but any suggestions would be awesome.

  • If you want to do a strip, I would just do some hot water washes. But a build up may or may not be the culprit.

    1)how often are you chaning?
2)What are you using for inserts?
    3)When is it leaking?

  • I assume you're talking about 4.0s? What are you stuffing with? Where are they leaking? Are te inserts completely soaked when you notice leaks?
4.0s but also freetimes as well. The 4.0s are for during the day, the freetimes are only for night and sometimes naps. I stuff with the regular inserts that came with it, plus sometimes if I know we'll be gone for a while and not in a place where I can easily change her, I extra stuff with a newborn insert. The leak spills out the side, on the inside of her leg, or her butt area. Sometimes they are completely soaked other times, nothing more than usual. It's become enough of a common occurence to where I'm annoyed.

Generally anywhere from 2-3 hours. Literally, nothing has changed. I've changed the same amount as I always do, and she's drinking less than she normally does even. It leaks at random times. It could be the freetimes at night, or randomly during the day. I never know when it's going to happen and it's made for a lot of random changes and me having to bring clothes pretty much everywhere. I'm trying to find what type of insert it is. I'm not sure.

  • Microfiber inserts is what we have.

  • If build up were the problem then the inserts would be repelling and not absorbing, so they would not ever be soaked.

She has probably just outgrown the absorbency. You should look into a different kind of insert, like hemp, and it could help a lot.

  • When we started having this problem I realized that the elastic had started giving out on our 4.0s. Could that be an issue?

  • ^relaxed elastics also makes more sense than build up.

I can check, but I don't think so. They still seem pretty elastic as far as I remember. Maybe certain ones are having trouble and I just missed it.

Damn. So even if I wash, that probably won't help? :(

Unlikely. There would be other signs of build up too, like stink/ ammonia, or suds in a rinse cycle.

If you really want to be sure do one cycle on hot with no detergent and check for bubbles. If there are a lot keep washing until they are gone. It couldn't hurt.

  • Even though she's drinking less, my kid started flooding her diapers around that age because she started holding it for one big pee instead of a few smaller pees. If she's peeing all at once the MF may not be absorbing quickly enough. I second switching to natural fibers.

I had to do the same.  I've switched to prefolds or bamboo inserts.  You could also pick up flats for cheap and they would work as well.

Plus I had to replace my elastic in my 4.0's.  I had gotten a new one for my son and when I saw the difference between the two I knew that was also causing issues.

This makes sense. I did the cleaning of them last night so I'm still kind of hoping that does the trick even though after reading what you ladies said, I doubt it. If we still have problems, we'll be switching to different kinds of inserts.

The elastic is ok, I checked them. I want to get new inserts and not prefolds. Is there a difference between hemp or bamboo? What kind do you recommend? It's been a long time since I had to shop for any sort of CDs ;)

If she's holding it in and peeing all at once, do not go with hemp.  Hemp is slower to absorb, you'll want to go cotton or bamboo.
