June 2014 Moms

What are you gonna let the docs do in LO's first hours?

Is anyone else gonna opt out of the Hep B shot till their week appointment? What about passing on the bath? I saw my best friends son get his in the hospital and it really traumatized me! All I want is my little Addilyn on mine or my SO's chest for the first hour.

I'm all down for them doing what they gotta do for her health! I just want to be able to have my time with her before they give her shots and stuff.

They work so quickly. By the time I got wheeled out of the OR I waited 5 minutes for my daughter and she was all mine for the rest of the day. So long as there are no complications, there is an efficient system in place for newborn care and procedures. She had her eye drops, vitamin k, glucose test and was weighed measured and washed and all set to be cuddled and loved!

  • I had a c/s last time and will have a repeat. They gave my son to my husband immediately and then he gave him to me when we went to post-op.

They did give him some formula while they sewed me up because they said his body temp was dropping. I was adamant he not have any but it actually did  no harm.

We don't get the Hep B shot till many weeks later, which our pedi and my ob are fine with (we have no risk factors.) I am fine with the Vitamin K shot as well as the goo in the eyes. Although, come to think about it, I don't ever recall them putting the goo in his eyes and none of his photos show eye goo. Odd.

  • Yup my hubby is a doc, we aren't going into this with no knowledge.

I'm so happy to see some of you guys feel the same about the bath as I do!

We delay Hep B and don't do the eye goop.  We also don't do a bath.  Absolutely do the Vit K shot (although that's not immediate) and PKU test.  Hearing test as well.
  • As long as there arent any issues, our hospital delays these procedures the first hour. We're opting out of Hep B and eye goop if delivery via c section.

  • They let me do skin to skin for 2 hrs after LO was born and then took him to the nursery, gave him shots, took vitals, etc. but didn't full on bathe him until much later (maybe 14hrs after he was born) He came back to me in the recovery room and they took him the following morning.  Tell your OB you want at least an hour of skin to skin if not longer.  Unless they have some kind of hospital policy they should grant your wishes.  And probably would have told you by now if they did have a policy about taking him right away. But ask now so your not surprised!

We're delaying hep B for a month or two, but everything else we'll do according to the standard hospital practice.

This. We have no risk factors for Hep B so we hold off.

  • I'm not sure what the procedure after a csection are but I want delayed umbilical cord clamping, my dh to cut umbilical cord, and immediate skin to skin (as long as baby is fine), they can hold out on the shower. I am letting them do the vit k and hep b and just get that out of the way. Also not sure when circ is done but was told it will be done before we leave the hospital.
  • I trust my doctor and will do everything that needs to be done.

  • The only thing we're delaying is Hep B. My hospital is very big on keeping baby with mom as long as possible before they do all the weighing, cleaning and all that jazz. That's of course barring any complications. Everything else though I plan on letting them do as they normally would.

Me too.  My coworkers had their sons at the same hospital, and they both got over an hour of skin to skin immediately after birth.  Just standard practice at my hospital.  I'm fine with the eye goop etc too.

adreamcometrue2011 i am having a c section and the one Dr I talked to said they do not do skin to skin with c section.  Hubby can hold but I will not be able to until I get into recovery.  My Dr seemed a bit more relaxed and I think he might if all is going ok with the section.  That is one thing that bummed me out with c section.  I want to say it is hospital policy.  I am going to check again when i am there.  Will not give up.

  • Whatever the hospital is on board with.  Same place I had C, so I know we can do delayed cord cutting, immediate skin to skin, at least an hour before the eye goop/shot, and the bath happened in the recovery room with us there (I am honestly not sure how soon/far after birth that was).  Worked well last time so we'll just do a repeat!

Check with your hospital. Mine encourages skin to skin, even with a c-section

  • We plan to delay HepB until a future pediatrician visit (probably a few weeks, once BFing is established and any jaundice is cleared) and plan to delay the first bath for at least a day or two.  If I deliver at the birth center, they don't give baths so that won't be an issue at all.  Otherwise, we are declining the eye ointment, but allowing the Vit K shot.  This can hopefully be done during skin to skin along with the other assessments.

With DS, I missed out on skin-to-skin due to a number of issues related to my delivery.  It was at least a half hour before I could see or hold him, probably more like an hour.  Of all the things that "went wrong" with his delivery, this ended up being the thing that emotionally hurt the most.  I hope with this LO I am able to have immediate skin-to-skin.

  • My hospital does the first hour after birth skin to skin for vaginal and c-sections. They are the only hospital in my city that does this. They will do the Vit K and eye goop while the baby is on my chest, but won't weigh and measure until after the first hour. I agree with their policies and will be doing what they suggest.
  • Pregnancy brain, I cannot remember the benefits of waiting weeks on hep B if they have to get it eventually anyway. Also, why no eye goop?

-- Stuck in the quote box --

I can only speak for myself here, but I am choosing to delay HepB for a few weeks because I can't think of a compelling reason why my newborn would need the vaccine immediately upon birth (ie. I am HepB negative, as is everyone who will be regularly interacting with her at first).  The way I look at it, birth is a tough enough process on a newborn so if I can delay an innoculation for a few weeks until she's BFing well and her body has adjusted to life outside, I will.  On the other hand, she will be getting VitK immediately because there is a benefit to getting this from the get-go.

I am declining the eye ointment because I do not have syphilis or gonorrhea.  The eye ointment is mainly to protect from blindness due to these two diseases.  While I agree that the eye ointment doesn't seem to have any strong negatives to it, I'm generally against the unnecessary use of antibiotics, so I'll be declining it.

  • I thought another thing with the eye goop is that it can mess with their ability to focus, which means they can't see you well, which means it takes longer to recognize you by sight...but I could be misremembering and as a newborn, they can't see that far from themselves anyway.

  • We did skin-to-skin for over a hour before they did anything with Isaiah. After that, they did weight, first bath, and his shots.

Our hospital does immediate skin-to-skin barring any problems, and follows up with the other stuff later on.  We'll do that.  We won't say no to any of it, but I'm happy to be delivering in a place where babies aren't taken from the room unless absolutely necessary, and where you don't have to ask to have your baby immediately.

With my daughter I didn't get immediate skin-to-skin because of some issues, but it didn't really impact my view of her birth or anything - I was amazed and ecstatic to get her when I got her.

  • I am leaning towards starting the hep b series in the hospital, but I found this note interesting - my midwife said one reason they recommend hep b at birth is that for some infants, it is the only interaction they'll have with the medical system.

  • We will be doing delayed cord clamping (ob policy anyways), skin to skin (also ob policy), eye goop, no bath for 24 hours, and in Canada, the first shots aren't until 8 weeks anyways.

My care provider with DS said the same. The only reason that HepB is done immediately after birth is because they are a "captive audience".

Exactly this.  It was started as a public health initiative for babies that did not go on to receive any pediatric care, to try and stem the spreading of Hep B.  I'm hep b. neg. and my baby presumably will not be sharing any needles or having unprotected sex in the first couple weeks of his life, so there's no reason to introduce a deactivated virus into his system during his first few hours of his life.

i don't question, I let them do whatever they need to keep the baby healthy.  just happy to be here.
  • I don't have a choice due to special circumstances, but I found it interesting that due to said circumstances, hep B and eye goop won't happen. Everything else is out of our control, just focusing on getting through the first few hours with everyone healthy.
