Skin Tags

Really random question - I have a few skin tags on my neck and was wondering if they can be removed during pregnancy?  Obviously I can wait until after birth if necessary, just curious as they are rather unsightly.  This is probably a really dumb question so apologies in advance :)  I've never had skin tags removed before - don't know of any reason why they couldn't be during pregnancy, but don't know enough about it to know for sure.

TIA!

Re: Skin Tags

  • I would ask your OB and dermatologist

  • I have a spot on my nose and asked my OB what can be done while pregnant . He said local anesthesia was fine. Not sure how they remove skin tags.
  • DH has had a few small ones removed in the past and it was a really simple procedure. Def consult with your doc though!

And, if it makes you feel better, since I will be going in for a dental cleaning soon, I asked my OB in advance whether or not dental work was safe like filling cavities (if it comes up at my appt) and I was told local novocaine shots would be safe for LO. I would imagine that a local shot for skin tag removal would similarly be safe.

My doc just freezes them off. I didn't require any novocaine shots or pain meds. It wasn't painful at all. I have quite a few more in pregnancy that I am planning to remove soon.
  • Thanks everyone - appreciate the input!

  • I used to work as a medical assistant at a dermatologist. It would be safe to do. If they are larger, they'll use a local anesthetic and cut the off, if they're smaller they'll either freeze or burn them off without the numbing.
  • I got a couple last pregnancy and they kind of fell off on their own after some time. I had one on my underarm and I accidentally shaved it off. I've heard of people using dental floss to squeeze them off if they are small.

  • I was literally going to ask my ob about this on Friday! I got a couple during my last pregnancy and they never went away. Now they're just getting bigger.

I had to have tissue around a mole biopsy removed this pregnancy. Local anesthesia was approved.
Skin tags can keep popping up. I'd wait until after delivery (and possibly breast feeding or initial post partim) to let hormones regulate. That way you can get a full assessment and maybe avoid another trip to the doc.

  • Wait until it is over.... you will likely have more skin tags appear as time goes on in this pregnancy.  I actually went to a dermo about 4 months post-partum last time and had a full exam and removal of the odd shaped ones.  I have already noticed that my moles are getting bigger this time. UGH.

I grew a few skin tags on my neck and in my armpit during my last pregnancy and my Dr just cut them off...it was painless.
