Cloth Diapering

Question about flats

Hey everyone!! I have a 11 week old LO and have been cloth diapering since birth. It's time to add some more diapers to our stash and wanted to know more about flats since so many of you seem to love them! We have really loved prefolds/WH and covers most, which really surprised me and my DH!! So my questions are: Why do you like flats? What is your favorite flat? What is your favorite fold? Anything else you can think of to tell me about flats? Thanks!!

Re: Question about flats

  • Nothing to add, except that I'd also love to know what folds people like best. I just picked up some FSTs and have yet to use them b/c I am intimidated lol.

Very nice @TMGS2013. All I have to add is I love Origami fold from 8 months to 18 months. Diaper bag fold after that.

Flour Sack Towel. They're inexpensive cotton towels you can get at Wal-Mart that are the size of most flats.

  • One thing I like about flats is that they are hard to ruin and cheap to replace if you manage to do so. I also like how easy they are to handwash so you can wash them practically anywhere that has water. I use the diaper bag fold and pad fold to stuff pockets.

  • I have Imagine birdseye flats and some off-brand flannel flats as well. I prefer the birdseye because they pad-fold with less bulk, the flannel were SO CHEAP.

I use mini-kite fold because I have a 1 week old, so it's the least bulky fold with a snappi/boingo on him. But honestly, we have so many newborn covers I usually just pad fold them and put them in a cover. We've only had one poop big enough to get on the cover with a pad fold, and it is the most trim way to diaper him right now.

  • I have GMD flats in their regular size and the large size.
I usually fold the regular size ones into a pad fold and make the large ones into a prefold and secure like I would a normal prefold.
I also use some small flats as the inserts for our pocket diapers, I don't remember the brand.

I love flats because they're super easy to clean, they're fast to dry, and I like that they look nice and trim under a cover.

I love my birdseye, but I've never tried bamboo in a flat.

I just thought I'd mention that FST are great for making sure you don't drop food on your newborns face when they're cluster feeding and you need to eat

I used prefolds for this when E was a baby. :)

  • I like flats because I wouldn't be able to CD while traveling without them. While we try to make sure we will have access to W/D, it doesn't always work out that way and it's easy to launder flats by hand or with less than stellar equipment.

Before DS got very mobile/kicky, I liked airplane fold. But that's hard to do right now, so I stuff the flats into pockets and we are good to go.
  • Thanks everyone for your comments!! Looks like I will definitely be ordering some flats! I was nervous about the folds but watched some of the ones y'all suggested on YouTube and they don't look too hard.

@Rrrrrachel‌ I have Osocozy flats which I love, but I have one Nickis bamboo flat that I got as a freebie and it's awesome! It's softer and thinner than the regular flats and fst's I have and absorbs way more. I only which they were cheaper!

  • Thanks! Nickis was what I was looking at.

  • @Rrrrrachel‌ I have 1 nickis and the rest is diaper rite. I can take a pic if you would like, but I prefer the diaper rite as they are bigger and I can more easily fold with them. I usually just end up pad folding the nickis.

  • I only have prefolds, not true flats, but  I love that they're a really inexpensive way to get into CDing. I also don't seem to get as upset if they get a bit stained ;) I had some pockets that I rarely used because I didn't want to "wreck" them.

As for folds, I mostly do the Bikini Twist or the Ooey fold - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBSY7_f1pqQ

  • @Tmgs2013‌

What kind of fold do you do? I'm looking for a fold that I can do on all of my flats after they are done drying. So I can have them ready like you do.

  • What is the best fold for newborns who are exclusively breast fed? I'm worried about poo explosions and Flats make up 80% of our NB stash. I didn't cloth diaper until our oldest was already eating solids so I have no idea about the NB stage.

Well now you made me look. Now I want a pack....
  • A little harder to repurpose as dish towels down the road, though.
