Alternate nicknames for a "Junior" ?

My husband very much wants to name our boy after him, and I support the idea in theory. My concern is that there are no suitable nicknames for his first name that we like, and I'm not into calling the kid by his middle name (too many people I know with that name). The initials are also out as they spell BJ and I'm not doing that to the poor thing - haha. So we are down to alternates for "Junior":

I am partial to Chip.  It's my uncle's name and he still goes by it as a 40+ year old adult.  It suits him :)
  • I really like Chip. J.R. reminds me of the TV show Dallas, but that's a cultural reference that will be dead for your LO's peers.

    I think Duece is cute!

Does your hub have name that can go from formal to informal? My uncle made his son a Jr.
My uncle either goes by James or Jim and my cousin goes by Jimmy.

I chose chip. Cute and we know someone that goes by that. I would suggest NOT using deuce. Because all I can think of is the terrible things kids will say.

  • My dad was a junior and everyone in his family calls him Demi to this day. I always thought it was really sweet. Also D.J. - for "Demi John." They called his brother Chip so I like that name too ;P

Agreed that that is cute, although we'd have a D.B. if we did that - hahahah.  Oh this poor kid.  BJ, DB... so far its JR or Chip I think. :)

    Why not just "Junior"?

Please name your child the same thing that you are going to call him.

DH was named after his father and always called by his middle name.  He still goes by his middle name and it is a PITA when dealing with anything legal. He's considered getting it changed legally many times, but it is an annoying process to change your name if it isn't because you got married.

So if you aren't planning to call him B., don't name him B.
I generally agree - which is why I don't want to call him by his middle name or anything that is a "real" name.  But for the sake of my own sanity in the house I need a nickname that is some sort of take-down without a complete name replacement.  He can still be B, IRL- the way I see it its no different than being "Jimmy" to your family but "James" at work.

  • I like B.J and J.R

You might end up calling him something else once you see his personality.

DH is a Jr and his dad is Jim. He is stuck with Jimmy since no one calls him James but me and everyone not his family. We will also name our boy, if we have one the 2nd time around, after them, but he won't be a Jimmy. We'll go with J.D. People suggested Tres, but we're not a fan.

I am glad you're leaning toward J.R. or Chip. Deuce reminds me of taking a deuce, which is up there with B.J. and little kids can be cruel.

  • @scottysgirl77‌ that is so sad! Poor little guy and mean teacher (or mean school policy)!

  • My husband is a III and goes by a derivative of his last name. It's not that big of a deal or a PITA to explain what his real name is if people ask. That said, I would never make our son the IV.

  • I have two cousins that are juniors to their respective parents and they've always been "Little Fullname" to the family even now as adults. But everyone outside the family just calls them their names.

For example if it the dad's name was James, the son would just be Little James.

My poor brother is the 5th (we are not royalty) He is call T-John. French slang for little John. For his official name for work he switches between his first and middle name.

Me and my other brother also go by our middle names (all named after living family members) and it can be a pain but not on a daily basis. However, my little boy is going to be called his first name.
  • Oh! I forgot to say that my dad's side calls me Little Sara bc I am named for my aunt. But of course I do not go by that in the real world. So your LO could just go by Little whatever at home and then by his real name at school.

  • Why do you need a nickname?  I'm honestly curious?  I don't really like any of the options (dear god, not deuce!) and would say just go with the full name.

I voted for Chip, too.  I don't like J.R., and I don't like Junior.  Not knowing what the full first name is, I can't suggest anything else.  PLEASE don't call him BJ or Deuce, though!

DH is a Jr; they are both James.  His dad is Jim and he's Jimmy, but when he was a kid, they were usually Big Jim and Little Jim or Big Jimmy and Little Jimmy.  I hate the whole big/little thing, so I'd really rather not give this kid the same name.  IF we were to decide to give this kid the same name, though, we've already decided we'd call him Trip.  DH hates his middle name, so he's really leaning away from using his same name, too.
