Cloth Diapering

gDiapers?

Hi! 1st time mom here...starting my registry and I'm trying to decide on a cloth diapering brand! I see that Babies R Us carries a brand called gDiapers. Anyone here have experience with these? Are they any good? I'm also registering with Target and Amazon...any brands you can suggest from those locations would be great too! I am in the early stages of researching cloth, but it's something i always knew I wanted to do. Any additional advice from seasoned vets would be greatly appreciated!

gDiapers tend to be a love/ hate kind of diaper, with more leaning towar the hate. There are just much better ones out there for more reasonable costs.

Amazon is a great place to register for diapers as they have such a big selection, but both target and babies r us have MUCH larger selections that are for sale online but not in store.

Read some of the links in the FAQ to help you decide what kind of diapers you think you are lookin for, and then we can rec our favorite brands.

Some factors to think about as you learn about the different types:
-How big a factor is cost?
-how big a factor is simplicity?
    - how big a factor is cuteness?
-will LO be going to daycare, and will they use cloth there?
    - do you want mostly one kind of diaper, or a variety?

I've got some g diapers and I don't ever reach for them. They have this weird plastic "shelf" that I don't care for. And the liner made crystals. And I didn't like that.

So far I love my bottom bumpers and bum genius small and xs for my newborn.
I only JUST got the hang of my workhorses and prefolds.

I also really really love fitteds. I only have Twinkie tush fitteds though. But I want some sustainable babyish ones soon.
If you knew better, you'd do better.
  • I'm also a FTM and have a piggy-back question about gdiapers.  I don't want to use them full-time, but they appear to be slimmer, so I was thinking I would have one or two in each size (stuffed with reusable liners or prefolds) for baby outfits that can't handle the fluff.  Are they truly slimmer and my thoughts seem reasonable? Or am I way off base?

  • I'm the oddball here who had a good experience with gDiapers. We didn't switch to CDs until DD1 was 6 weeks old, so we didn't have experience with the newborn diapers, but the smalls worked really well for us.

They are definitely the trimmest style we have. We made it through the mediums before switching over to different styles (grovia AI2s mostly).

I agree they take extra work to piece together and you'd probably have to buy 3 sizes of covers to last you through potty training.

We loved them for the size small stage with the cloth inserts b/c they were easy to learn on, but if I could do it again, I wouldn't make up my whole stash with them.

  • Thanks for your help everyone!!!  I'm doing A LOT of research so this is very helpful.

    mrshudson618: to answer your questions:

-How big a factor is cost?  Not a huge factor;  I love a good bargain, but don't want to skimp on quality
-how big a factor is simplicity?  Simplicity is a bit more important, especially when it comes to hubby- the simpler the better!
    - how big a factor is cuteness?  I'm fine with plain or fancy...as long as they get the job done!
-will LO be going to daycare, and will they use cloth there?  She'll have the occassional stay with grandma and will use cloth there as well; I plan to train her extensively!
    - do you want mostly one kind of diaper, or a variety? I think since this is our first, we'll probably try a few different brands until we find what works best for us.

All-in-all I think the best plan for us is to register for/purchase several different brands to begin with.  Once we figure out which work best we'll narrow it down and hopefully eventually settle on 1-2 brands.

  • fWIW, I haven't used gdiapers, but I do like the best bottoms more than flips and they are similar styles. The gdiapers are cute, but they are not one size, and the appeal of the disposible inserts is canceled by the fact that it would cost as much or more than disposibles. They just didn't seem cost friendly.

Since you like simplicity and you were looking at gDiapers, I think an AI2 is a good starting point for you. They go on easily, but are also usually easy when it comes to laundry. Best bottoms is a really popular and loved brand here.

If you want a cheaper route, prefolds or flats and covers can basically function like any AI2 when laid in a cover, but can be better at containing nb poop if you take the more complicated route and learn some different folds and snappi or pin.

  • Hi!  I have some gDiapers to sell if you want to go that route.

    9 Xsmall (newborn)
    Some Smalls...will have to count
Mediums...I think I have 9 of those, too.

The newborns are EUC, the rest are VGUC I would say.  I like them, have not had problems, but to be fair, I didn't use them that much, so maybe I'm not a very good judge, I dunno!  :)  You can email me at elizabethjane2010 at gmail dot com if you're interested!

I hated g pants, but I like the cloth inserts. They are very trim. They hold a good amount for how  tiny they are. I would skip the g pants, but put an insert into a regular cover (thirsties duos size 1 work very well with them) if you need something trim. I think if you tried to stuff with a prefold it would make them just as bulky as having a prefold on your kid. There are definitely better options out there (as pp said grovia is awesome) but I don't mind the inserts. They also make great doublers that have a stay dry part if it's needed for overnight with prefolds.
