Feeling so bad for my little girl

She was up most of the night and had been crying a lot today and grunting like she has gas. Sometimes it comes out but most the time it doesn't and she will finally fall asleep. She has hardly eaten today. We had family over yesterday and I kind of got an upset stomach myself from all the food. I feel so guilty now because whatever I ate must not of agreed with her stomach either. I tried to pump and dump once and gave her a bottle of milk I had in the freezer which she wouldn't take. We just went our and bought gripe water and it seems to of helped a little. Does anyone have any suggestions for a gassy baby? I feel so bad for her! Also are there certain foods you've avoided while breast feeding?

Re: Feeling so bad for my little girl

  • Do you have a doctor to call? Not eating due to excessive gas doesn't sound too good. Babies get gas, but not to affect their eating. Are you burping her enough? Bicycle legs?

Poor girl. I hope you find a solution quick! It took me a few days to figure out how to burp DS properly so the gas for him was uncomfortable.

  • I use gas drops before every feed which they started her on in the nicu! They work wonders

  • I agree with PP that a call to your pediatrician might he in order if she's not eating.

As far as what we use, the Little Tummies gas drops have been a life saver for us. It literally works within 10 minutes and it's safe to give them at every feeding if you need to.

I was told by my pediatrician not to necessarily avoid foods that might cause gas. He said that it could lead to her developing and intolerance or sensitivity to those foods later on. I don't know if I really believe that, but so far I have not adjusted my diet at all and we seem to be ok.

I hope she feels better soon and you get some sleep tonight!

  • She's ate a couple times today but it's almost like she just wants to sleep more since she was up so much last night not feeling well. I will definitely call though if it continues! I did try tummy massage which did seem to get some out and pushing her legs up. The gripe water seems to of helped. It did take a couple days for us to get good at burping. We've found that patting her bottom helps more than her back. My mom said I was like that but I do have to admit that in the middle of the night when she's passed out again after eating there has been a couple times I've just laid her back down so I need to not worry about waking her. She seemed to be getting her gas out just fine until last night. She is 11 days old. Thanks for the advice!

  • If she isnt keeping up with her wet diapers that warrants a pedi call or ER visit immediately. Dehydration in a newborn is a big deal.

  • She's still having wet and poopie diapers. She is eating I just meant she's not eating as much as usually like not for as long because she just falls asleep or starts to not feel good from the gas. She actually just woke up and is eating better since I gave her that gripe water. I think her stomach just hurt from the gas that she didn't feel like eating as much and sleeping probably took her mind off the gas pains. Thankful she seems to be feeling better.

  • Tummy massage, circular in a clock-wise direction.  You could try pro-biotics and avoid gassy foods, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc.  Also, could be your dairy consumption, you could try cutting dairy out of your diet.

  • I was wondering about the dairy. I had some homemade ice cream the day she got really gassy. I will have to try that.
