My mom transitioned her kids to a bed around 18 months (some younger), so it is doable. That said, I have two cribs for my kids (22 and 9 months), and I have no desire to move to a bed for my DD until it is necessary. I love having her contained while sleeping, and she isn't trying to get free yet. If you dont' mind getting a second crib, I recommend it.
Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.
I already got second crib they will be 18 months apart and baby will be in my room in beginning.. As long as Ella can't climb out she is staying contained in her crib
My boys are 19 months apart and we got another crib. DS1 was 26-27 months before we turned it into a toddler bed. Well be 20 months this time and I'm planning on transitioning my oldest from a toddler bed to twin bed sometime around his 3rd birthday so we can use his crib for the new baby.

I think that's probably smart. Why add another stressor to bed time? Thanks ladies.
Yep yep yep! I just see now reason to mess up a good thing if your oldest sleeps well in a crib. Last thing you want is a toddler getting out while you are dealing with a newborn. Small price to pay for that piece of mind. Heck, I really wish I could put my 2.5 year old back in a crib. REALLY BAD!
We were 2 under 2, now 3 under 3!

Mine are 19.5 mos apart and we did two cribs. DD is 3 and just got out of her crib last month and DS is still in his at 20 mos. Definitely the right decision!
Mine are 17 months apart and we have 2 cribs. I moved DD to a bed at 26 months and DS to his crib at 3wks so they were both in cribs for 8 months.

Mine will be 21 months apart, we moved DD into a twin bed a few months ago. She had zero issues switching and has yet to try and get out of her bed. We did want to make sure we did it a few months before baby to give her time to adjust. I am so happy we decided not to buy a second crib.

Two cribs here, with kids 21 months apart. My older one will stay in a crib until she starts trying to climb out. She's a great sleeper in her crib. Why would we ever mess with that??
Mine will be 23 months apart and we are definitely doing a second crib. We are just getting the cheapest one from ikea with a half way decent mattress. We don't want another $600 investment like the last combo was since we will only use it for about a year or less. My best friend moved her son at 16 months when they had #2 and she said it was fine, but my daughter sleeps beautifully and I don't want to mess with a good thing!! I plan go move her when we night potty train and/or it becomes unsafe for her. She's never tried to get out, though.
We have two cribs. It is wonderful to have a safe place to put the older one when you're attending to baby! You could also take a wait and see approach. DD2 and DD3 are 20 months apart. My youngest is still sleeping in a crib and will probably sleep in a pack n play for a while after that. In this instance, I probably could do with just 1 crib. I would rather keep DD2 in her crib though and not feel like I have to "shove her out" just so that DD3 can have a crib.
Glad you asked I am struggling with the same issue. Mine will be 17 months apart. I figured I can keep the new one in the bassinet for at least 3 months which leaves them 20 months apart. I may go the pack in play route for a few extra months but I really don't want to buy a 2nd crib.
My girls are 17 months apart (6mo & 2 yrs old next week) they share a room and both have cribs. My toddler has no desire to transition into a toddler bed and I'm ok with that! I'm thinking in the next 3-6 months she'll be ready to move to a toddler bed and I'm hoping I'm ready by then too! We brought the baby home to a pack & play with a bassinet insert and she slept nights there and naps in their shared room. It works well and now we have 2 pack & plays for traveling or camping
We practically waited until my first was climbing out of his crib, which I recommend. As soon as we converted to his toddler bed he stopped napping. I would absolutely get a 2nd crib, personally. There's a lot of change for the first born all ready! Unless they are ready I wouldn't rush it!
I would suggest waiting it out....my first was climbing out of her crib at 18 months and in a twin bed with the door gated just before 2....she transitioned great! My 2nd and 3rd will be 20 months apart and I plan to wait as long as possible to make the decision. My son sleeps pretty great in the crib and if he is not climbing out we are buying another crib. Figure I can get about 4 months out of baby in bassinet in our room and we will make a game time decision
We have two cribs. DD1( 28 mo) and DD2 (10 mo) both sleep great at night and nap times so no way I am messing with that! I can honestly see DD1 being in her crib until she's 3-3.5 yrs old.
My son turns 1 next week and he's already in his big boy bed for naps. We'll be transitioning him into it for nighttime soon. But we also never had a crib, just a PNP. We won't have a crib for #2.

We were dealing with this dilemma as well until my 17 month old solved it for us. He started climbing out of his crib 2 weeks ago! We ended up getting him a big Step 2 fire engine bed with really high sides so he can't roll out. He loves playing in it and sleeps better in that than he did in his crib. We put nightlights in his room and ours so he can easily find me if he wakes up at night which only happened once. We got lucky with the transition.
