WWYD? (Possible TMI, very embarrassing)

So I am just about 3 weeks PP. Delivery was a little rough and I ended up having an episiotomy (no additional tearing). The doc also had to stretch me quite a bit and use the forceps to help DD come out. Needless to say, I'm calling my nether regions a "war zone".  My first PP BM was very hard and painful and I wound up with an internal hemorrhoid. Since then, though, I've had very loose stool and have had several instances of literally shitting my pants because I have no control to hold it until I can run to the bathroom.

I'm not taking any stool softeners, and I'm even taking an additional iron supplement along with my prenatal vitamin. My main concern is the lack of control I seem to have. When this happens I cannot feel those muscles to hold it in and it literally just falls out of me. Luckily it's only happened while I've been home, but at 3 weeks PP I'm starting to get concerned. So WWYD? Should I call my OB, my regular doctor, or just wait it out because I'm still healing? Anyone ever have this happen with this or previous PP recovery? It's really embarrassing and I'd like to be able to leave the house without worrying about this.

Sorry to hear about this! I have no experience but I had read that this can be a side effect from child birth and not unusual. Id call OB and maybe ask if they have any suggestions. Maybe some exercises you can do? Isn't child birth recovery the best? :-/

  • I would let your ob know if it has happened repeatedly, but it happened once to me with DSs recovery (vag delivery, DD was a c/s). Thank heavens I was home. Peeing myself happened more frequently. The muscles and such down there have been thru the wringer and it takes a while to get them back.

  • I would try and schedule an appointment with my OB before the 6 week check up. I had a 4th degree tear and my doc wanted to see me 10 days after delivery.

  • I know you said you're not on a stool softener, but check your iron supplement. This happened to me a few times PP and I finally realized my iron supplement has a stool softener in it. Now I space my iron pill out every other day and it hasn't happened since.
  • It almost happened to me a couple times. Total "oh my god it's coming and I can't stop it!" panic. I was mortified. But apparently it's normal for vaginal delivery recovery. It's much better now and I'm four weeks PP.

  • I'd definitely get in to be examined by your OB. Your tear could have been more extensive than they realized, and your rectal muscles may not be intact.

  • I got a stomach bug and enjoyed crapping my pants 3 times because I did not have the control to make it to the restroom. I know nerves get damaged from the trauma at birth and can take a while to recover causing the fun of incontinence. It wouldn't hurt to put in a call to your OB though just as a precaution.

Iw as afraid of this my first night home (5 days pp) I just seemed to have poop everywhere...but I think it was actually I wasn't cleaning myself properly.  I was so afraid of the stitches.

  • Did you have IV antibiotics? I had a c-section, so not the same exact situation, but I had diarrhea almost every day after I came home for a while. As it turns out, the antibiotics kill off good bacteria in your intestines and a probiotic can help get things back to normal. Maybe try that?

  • I have no experience with this, but I bet it will get better as your muscles recover. If it were me though, I would call my OB just to ask their opinion.
