GOT fans, please come in.

I would love to read the GOT books this summer, but I'm only on season 3 and want to avoid spoilers. Did you read the books first (if ever) and did it ruin the television series for you, or did reading the books make the show better in your opinion?

  • I have not read the books, but I am also thinking about it. 3 more episodes then nothing for a year? I can't wait that long!

  • I'm reading the books now and up to date on the series. It doesn't ruin anything and while the show follows the books very closely, the books are way more intimate so you get to understand how the characters are feeling and what they're thinking. Very cool.

I haven't read any and the show is still good for me. A lot of stuff is different anyway and the show has reached where the books have not in some areas.

Oh yeah, this too. It was said recently that the show will eventually divert from the books and this season is adding parts from future books so it's not going to be aligned.

  • I have not read the books, but I hear they're better than the show....which seems impossible so I'm interested.

For those that have read the books: is GRRM's writing style an "easy" read, or are the books pretty dense? I'm also considering giving the books a try after this season, but this is not a genre I've read before.

This is also not a usual genre for me. I read the Amazon first pages for that very reason and it didn't seem too overwhelming.

IMO they are generally easy. The way the chapters are broken down is nice because they follow one character at a time. The lingo is uh, English medieval-y? with castle and war lingo to boot. Obviously the books are long but fun so doesn't seem so long.

  • Easy to read and for me, enhances the show. Yea, some parts you end up not being surprised (red wedding, purple wedding, etc) but it's cool to see them play out and see the differences. I will likely retread them this summer.

I read the books first, DH watched the first season then picked up the books. I thought reading first enhanced the show and so did DH. He thought it helped him keep track of all the characters/story lines better after having read the books vs watching alone.
  • I had read the books before watching any of the series and I don't think it has ruined the series for me. Sure you know some things are coming but but it's quite different because in the book you're seeing the world through a characters eye and in the tv show it's from an outside point of view.
